Buffs Remain In Fifth At Nanea
October 29, 2024 | Women's Golf
KAILUA-KONA, Hawai'i — Colorado women's golf remained in fifth place after two rounds of the Nanea Invitational shooting 7-over-par 299, Tuesday on the 6,449-yard par 73 Nanea Golf Club.
Seven-over also accounts for the Buffaloes' 36-hole score (591) thanks to their even-par effort on Monday. Despite dropping seven strokes from the first round, Colorado's place in the standings stayed intact due to most of the field having similar days. Aside from the top four teams in the standings, which have put a 16-stroke distance between them and the rest of the field, Colorado's 7-over was right there among the best of the rest.
Top-ranked Stanford held onto the overall lead with a 5-under second round and is 18-under overall. No. 6 Texas had the day's best round at 13-under to move into second place, three strokes behind Stanford at 15-under. No. 8 Arizona State and No. 47 San Jose State are tied for third at 10-under.
The conditions made for a challenging day. Winds were sustained around 15 miles per hour while gusting up to 20 mph throughout the round, making for some tricky approach shots. Colorado did its best to work through the conditions. While birdies were at a premium, only 10 on the day by Colorado's scoring golfers, mistakes were at a minimum. The Buffaloes' four scoring golfers shot no worse than bogey on any one hole on the day.
"The wind played a big factor, and where these pins are located, you're playing some shots 20 yards off of where the pin is," Colorado assistant coach Mia Landegren said. "For example, take an approach shot where you're aiming left of the green to hit the shot, let it hit the left side of the green and have it roll down to the pin. So mentally you have to understand your lines and trust the wind is doing its job, trust the yardage book and trust (the coach) to help you know where to hit it."
"The wind was tough, but they did a good job holding it together. Today was the type of day where it can go one way or the other. You could manage it and get by, or you can completely not trust yourself and get deflated. And I think we did a good job of holding it together."
Freshman Ellen O'Shaughnessy led Colorado with an even-par round of 73 to remain in the red for the tournament 1-under, tied for 17th overall and just three shots out of the top 10. O'Shaughnessy had the best single stretch of the day, playing the back nine at 1-under which featured eight-straight pars before recording one of her rounds' three birdies on the longest hole of the course, the 536-yard par-5 18th.
Freshman Sydney Givens is tied with California's Marie-Agnes Fischer for 24th overall at 2-over, just two strokes outside the top 20. Givens shot 1-over 74 for the second-straight round, making par on 13 of 18 holes. She has 28 pars over 36 holes which ranks second in the field.
Junior Morgan Miller is tied for 30th at 4-over after shooting a 76 on Tuesday, highlighted by a birdie on the 464-yard par-5 14th early in her round.
Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch is tied for 40th at 7-over climbing five spots in the standings following a 76 in the second round. She had a team-best four birdies on the day with three of them coming on par 5s at the fourth, sixth and 14th. Sophomore Carolyn Fuller is one stroke back, tied for 44th at 8-over.
Eight players are within two shots of the lead with one round to go. Arizona State's Isla McDonald-O'Brien maintained a share of the lead after a round of 71 on Tuesday and sits at 8-under. She is joined at 8-under by Oregon State's Raya Nakao and Texas' Farah O'Keefe who shot the low round of the day with a 67.
Colorado will play its final round of the fall season with a shotgun start at 11:30 a.m. MT. The Buffaloes will once again start on holes six through 10 and pair with Texas, BYU and Hawai'i.
