Buff Golfers Drop Final Big 12 Match To West Virginia

Third Time (Out of Four) That Four Matches Go The Distance
HOCKLEY, Texas — The University of Colorado men's golf team wrapped up three days of action in the Big 12 Match Play Championship here Wednesday with a 3-2 setback at the hands of West Virginia.
It was another back-and-forth battle throughout the morning on the 7,007-yard, par-71 Houston Oaks Country Club course for the Buffaloes, which finished the unique event with one win and three losses, all of which were close in nature.
"A tough loss today, but I thought the guys played really well," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Another full match came down to the 18th hole, which all four of them did. So, it is a great experience to build on there. Certainly going 1-3 for the week isn't what we wanted or expected, but match play is a unique format and we don't ever see Bermuda grass – but we can use both of those things to help us get better. I don't want to overstate the losses because we don't want to lose, but we played well in all four matches so that is some good stuff to build on."
Of the 15 teams competing here this week, CU by a large margin had the most competitive matches – 15 of the 20 came down to the 18th and final hole (usually Nos. 15 through 17 with the shotgun format), with two others decided on the 17th and one after 16 holes. On Wednesday, the Buffs were 7-under par collectively, with 23 birdies and 14 bogeys and a double (51 pars).
Senior Justin Biwer cruised to a 5 & 3 win over Carson Kammann, closing with a solid round with five birdies and eight pars with just a couple of bogeys; his last birdie on 451-yard, par-14th sealed the decisive triumph.
Senior Freddy Eisenbeis earned CU's other win, a 1-up verdict over Kaleb Wilson. Tied through 13 holes, the pair tied on the next three until Eisenbeis' par on the 204-yard 15th put him up by one, and when both made par on No. 16, it was over in CU's favor.
The other three matches were all also decided their last holes, two that had been tied prior. Sophomores Ty Holbrook and Brandon Knight both made bogey on the par-3 15th when their counterparts made pars on the 204-yarder. Junior Hunter Swanson bogeyed the par-4 14th to fall behind by one, and couldn't pull even as he and Pierce Grieve both parred No. 15 and birdied the par-5 16th. To their credit, both Holbrook and Knight were three down at one point and rallied to tie, with Swanson down by two on two occasions and managed to pull even both times.
The six participating Buffs here went 7-12-1 individually; Biwer, Eisenbeis and Knight were all 2-2, Holbrook 1-2-1, Swanson 0-1 and Dylan McDermott 0-3 (he battled a stomach bug which affected his play, the same illness that kept Swanson from playing the first two days).
The Buffs are now off for the next three weeks until they conclude the fall portion of their schedule in Hawai'i's Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate in Lahaina, Maui, on Nov. 2-4; it's the fourth straight year CU will play in the event.
NOTES: It was a bit more comfortable Wednesday, warming into the upper 70s with the humidity only in the 30s instead of the 80s the previous two days; sunny skies prevailed all week … No. 6 seed BYU won the championship with a 4-1 verdict over 13th-seeded Baylor in the complex (and frankly confusing) pool and point system utilized here … Kansas State was behind CU in most matches that were decided in 18 holes with 14, but the Wildcats played 25 matches over the three days to CU's 20; next up were Oklahoma State (12 of 25), Baylor and Texas Tech (11 of 25), Iowa State (10 of 20) and BYU and Houston (10 of 25). Arizona State had just two of such go the distance … Overall, the five Buffs won 90 holes and tied 162, dropping 96 (that's a win-tie percent of 72 percent; Eisenbeis won the most holes here with 21, while Biwer had the best win-tie percentage of .806 (won 18 holes, tied 36 and lost 13).
