Colorado will head to Georgia for first round action

BOULDER – Colorado soccer sweated it out for a week but had its name called during Monday's NCAA Tournament Selection show, solidifying the team's spot in the field of 64. The Buffaloes will head to Georgia to take on the No. 7 seeded Bulldogs on Friday (2:30 p.m. MT) in first-round action from Athens.

"We couldn't be more excited for the opportunity to compete in the NCAA tournament," head coach Danny Sanchez exclaimed. "We went through a tough stretch at the end of conference play, and the team kept battling and believing. We are very proud of this team and look forward to competing with a very talented Georgia squad."

Colorado (11-4-5) secured an at-large bid and its third tournament berth since the 20202 season. It is CU's eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament in Sanchez's 13 seasons and 14th overall. Colorado is 10-13-1 all-time in tournament games, advancing to the third round in 2006 and 2013.

The Buffs went 1-1 in the Big 12 Championship last week. The team's 2-1 win over Utah and a tightly contested 3-1 loss to regular-season champion TCU helped improve the team's status as they waited the last week in jeopardy. CU faced its share of adversity late in the season, finishing the regular season 0-2-4 with only two goals scored over the final six matches.

Colorado finished the season with an RPI rating of 55, the same as in 2023. The Buffs had Top 50 RPI wins over Big 12 Tournament Champions Kansas (27) and Oklahoma State (31). CU played to a 1-1 draw at Texas Tech (RPI 41).

CU is one of seven Big 12 teams in the field of 64. The Buffs finished ninth in its return to the Big 12 (4-2-5).

Georgia (8-6-6) advanced to the second round of the SEC Tournament, falling 1-0 to Arkansas. The Bulldogs had three draws against ranked opponents this season, including then-No. 1 Florida State. Georgia, the No. 7 seed in the SEC Tournament, defeated No. 10 Texas A&M, 1-0, to advance out of the first round. The Bulldogs rank eighth in the NCAA with a SEC-leading .861 save%, backed by Jordan Brown's .859 save%.

Friday will be just the third meeting between the Buffs and the Bulldogs. Colorado is 1-0-1 in the two previous meetings. It will be the first matchup between the two schools in 20 years, with the last contest resulting in a 0-0 double-overtime draw in Athens. The Buffs picked up a 2-1 overtime win in the team's first meeting in 2003.

Tickets can be purchased for $11 each, with all tickets being general admission. Tickets can be purchased online at CUBuffs.com/NCAATickets.

The winner of Friday's game will advance to take on the winner of No. 2 Wake Forest vs Morehead State.
