Men's Golfers To End Fall Season In Hawai'i

Gunning for a school record fifth top three finish this fall
LAHAINA, Maui — The University of Colorado men's golf team will conclude what so far has been the best fall season in the program's history here this weekend in the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate, which runs from Saturday through Monday.
Colorado, recently ranked No. 32 in the nation by both the coaches in the GCAA's Bushnell/Golfweek poll and in the Scoreboard computer rankings, is one of 21 schools set to compete. Oklahoma (No. 2) and LSU (No. 5), along with Georgia (No. 26) and the Buffaloes are the four top 40 teams in the field, which also features eight in the top 75.
This is the fourth straight year CU has entered the event, finishing second in 2021 and fourth the next year before sliding down to 17th in 2023. It once again will take place on the 6,700-yard, par-71 Royal Course at Ka'anapali Golf Club.
"Obviously, it's always good to be in Hawai'i," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The golf course is in great shape. We have a tremendous field with 21 really strong teams. I'm looking forward to seeing us compete this week. The team has really been working hard all fall and I expect a great week to finish out the fall."
CU will be represented by seniors Justin Biwer and Dylan McDermott, junior Hunter Swanson and sophomores Ty Holbrook and Brandon Knight, with freshman Parker Paxton participating as an individual. Biwer tied for 11th as a freshman in 2021 (204, -9) and Swanson tying for 24th last year (207, -6).
Biwer has been under par in all three visits here, and can tie his own record with a fourth as he has finished subpar four times in two other events. His stroke average for nine rounds here is 68.5, Swanson and McDermott right behind him (70.7 in six rounds for Swanson, 70.9 in nine for McDermott).
Thus far this fall, the Buffaloes have one win, two runner-up efforts and a third place finish in four stroke play tournaments. CU has had as many as five top five finishes in the fall three times, in 1980, 1992 and 2016; the only time CU had previously had four top three finishes before this year came in 1980. The last time CU was ranked this high approaching the end of the fall portion of the season was in 2016, when the Buffs went into the spring ranked as high as 24th.
The Buffaloes will then return to action in The Prestige at PGA West in LaQuinta, Calif., February 17-19. CU last played in the event in 2021, and has participated in it 11 times, including the first nine events as former CU golf coach, the late Mark Simpson, helped create the tournament at first for some of the best academic schools in the nation. Colorado's best finish was second in 2002, when Joe Liley recorded the Buffs' best effort, a 9-under 207 that placed him third.
