Colorado Tees Off Spring In 10th At San Diego State Classic

February 12, 2024 | Women's Golf

RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. — The University of Colorado women's golf team opened the Spring portion of the 2023-24 season on Monday in 10th place after the first 36 holes of the San Diego State Classic at The Farms Golf Club.

Colorado shot 38-over-par, 614, on the day and sits just eight strokes out of the top half of the 12-team tournament heading into Tuesday's final 18 holes. The Buffaloes had two somewhat similar rounds, scoring 20-over, 308, in the first round and 18-over, 306 in the second.

Scoring opportunities were difficult for everyone. No team shot under par and there was only one round at even. Not a single hole on the course played under par.

Virginia, the leader after two rounds, shot even on the second 18 holes to finish the day at 7-over, 583, one stroke better than South Carolina at 8-over, 584. Oregon is in third place at 14-over, 590.

Despite the high team scores, Colorado has three golfers in the top 15 heading into the final round. Sophomore Morgan Miller had Colorado's low 36-hole score and is tied for 13th at 5-over, 149. Senior Hailey Schalk and graduate Sabrina Iqbal are both one shot back, tied for 15th at 6-over, 150.

Miller and Iqbal had Colorado's two best individual rounds, both carding 1-over, 73s; Iqbal in the first round and Miller in the second. Iqbal started her day off with a bogey on the 364-yard, par-4, No. 8, but then made par on six-straight, and 11 of her next 12 holes. At 2-over through 14 holes, Iqbal got her first birdie of the day on the The Farms longest hole, the 519-yard, par-5, No. 3 and finished off her round with a second birdie on the par 4, No. 7, playing at 372-yards.

Miller shrugged off a 76 in the first round, to claim Colorado's low score in the second. She began the round with eight-straight pars, before getting into the red with a birdie on the 365-yard, par-4, No. 15 and was headed to the front at 2-under after another birdie on the 474-yard, par-5, No. 18. However, she struggled on the first few holes of the front nine, dropping back to 1-over with three bogeys in a four-hole stretch to close out her day.

Schalk shot 4-over, 76, in the first round and shaved two strokes that score in her final 18 holes, finishing with a 74 in the second. She had most of her success on the front nine, posting a team-best even score on that section of the course. Schalk had four birdies during her second round, three of those coming on the front.

Junior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch is tied for 55th place at 21-over, 165. Freshman Carolyn Fuller rounded out Colorado's team effort at 31-over, 175, and is tied for 62nd.

Junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding, playing as an individual, is tied for 47th at 16-over, 160. She has the low score of the three individuals playing in the tournament field. Waxer-Gooding shot a 76 in her first round, shaking off a rough start. She was 4-over through just three holes, but played even the rest of the way including a birdie at No. 18.

"Not the way we wanted to start the spring season but we did see some positives," Colorado coach Anne Kelly said. "We just need to be more consistent and eliminate the big numbers. Our short game was a bit rusty today and hoping we can clean that up a little bit."

Oregon's Kiara Romero is the leader after 36-holes at 5-under, 139, shooting one of only three sub-70 rounds on the day with a 69 in the first. San Francisco's Riana Mission, South Carolina's Louise Rydqvist and Virginia's Amanda Sambach are all one stroke off the lead at 4-under, 140.

Colorado will pair with California Baptist and Tulane in Tuesday's final round. The group will start between No. 14 and No. 18 with a shotgun start beginning at 9:30 a.m. MT.
