RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. — The University of Colorado women's golf team finished ninth at the San Diego State Classic as the Buffaloes closed out their first Spring tournament of the 2023-24 season Tuesday at The Farms Golf Club.
Colorado finished with a 54-hole score of 924, 60-over-par. The Buffaloes had their high score of three rounds at 21-over, 309, but it was enough to move up one spot into ninth place on the final leaderboard.
Low scores were hard to come by at The Farms this week. No team scored in the red in any round at the event and only one shot even. South Carolina took the team title at 16-over, 880. The Gamecocks' final round of 8-over, 296, was just enough to edge Virginia by a stroke (881, +17). Oregon was a distant third at 25-over 889.
"We certainly aren't happy with our overall finish, but there are good signs," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "We just need to keep working to eliminate some of the mental mistakes and big numbers."
Graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal had Colorado's low round of the day and top finish overall. She shot a 74 in the final round to finish tied for 13th at 8-over, 224. Iqbal had a slow start, falling to 4 over through her first six holes. She found a groove though toward the end of the front nine, making birdie on three consecutive par-4s on No. 6-8. Iqbal got back to even for the round with another birdie at on the 355-yard, par-4 11th, but slipped back to 2 over with bogeys on the par-3 14th and par-4 15th to finish her round.
"Sabrina got back on track today and played better," Kelly said. "She didn't get to play much in January due to an injury, but these three rounds of competition were helpful in getting her back up to speed and playing like we all know she is capable of. Tied for 13th in this field is a very respectable finish."
Sophomore Morgan Miller tied for 26th with a 54-hole score of 12-over, 228. Miller shot 78 on Tuesday, matching her high round for the 2023-24 season. She had a slow start, dropping four strokes through four holes playing her first eight at 6 over. Miller evened out from that point on though, highlighted by birdies on par-4s at No. 8 and No. 11.
Senior Hailey Schalk finished one shot back of Miller, tying for 28th at 13-over, 229. Schalk carded 7-over, 79, in the final round, saving her team-best 14th round in the 70s on the season with back-to-back birdies at No. 11 and the 510-yard, par-5 12th.
"Morgan fought hard and showed a lot of perseverance; she really played better than her scores reflected," Kelly said. "Hailey showed very positive signs with her game and we're excited to see how she can finish out this spring."
Junior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch and freshman Carolyn Fuller had their best of three rounds during Tuesday's action. Eidhagen Harrouch finished tied for 51st at 27-over, 243, after carding a 78 in the final round, highlighted by Colorado's lone eagle of the week at the 456-yard, par-5 18th. Fuller placed 61st overall at 39-over, 255, shooting 80 on Tuesday.
Junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding, playing as an individual, placed 46th at 22-over, 238, after shooting a 78 in the final round.
Oregon's Kiara Romero took medalist honors at 9-under, 207, after shooting a final-round 68. Virginia's Amanda Sambach was the runner-up at 5-under, 211 with UNLV's Toa Yokoyama one shot back at 4-under, 212, thanks to shooting the low round of the tournament with a 67 on Tuesday.
Colorado will return to action next week at the Pac-12 Preview, Feb. 19-21, at the Nanea Country Club in Kailua Kona, Hawai'i.
