Sabrina Iqbal
Buffs Open Pac-12 Preview In Seventh
February 19, 2024 | Women's Golf
KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado women's golf team is in seventh place after the first round of the Pac-12 Preview, shooting even-par 292 on the 6,449-yard par 73 Nanea Golf Club, Monday.
Colorado's even round is its best of the young spring season and sixth team score at par or better in 2023-24. Three Buffaloes – seniors Sabrina Iqbal and Hailey Schalk and sophomore Morgan Miller – are all in the top 20 after round one with freshman Francesca Sumcad just one stroke outside that group. Colorado is just three strokes out of the top 5 and five out of the top 3.
No. 20 ranked Arizona and No. 4 USC are tied for the team lead at 10-under 282, followed by Washington (-5, 287), No. 2 Stanford (-4, 288) and No. 6 UCLA (-3, 289).
Although Colorado's round finished at even, it was anything but that. Nearing the midpoint of the round, the Buffaloes found themselves in second place, just a couple strokes out of the lead at 7 under before falling back into the pack down the stretch.
With the shotgun start, the Buffaloes started their round in the middle of the back nine (holes 11-15). Colorado was 1 over as its golfers made the turn to the front nine of the course, where the squad would enjoy its best stretch of the day. The Buffaloes' four scoring golfers played holes 1-6 at 8 under, recording nine of their collective 12 birdies on the day in that span.
The birdies stopped at that point however as the Buffaloes dropped seven strokes between the 7th and 10th. All four scorers finished on solid notes though, each making par on their final two holes to remain at even heading into the club house.
"Proud of the consistency the team showed today," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "Nanea is a challenging course and the team showed good patience and perseverance today. But I know we are not satisfied and left a few shots out there today. Hoping to clean up a few mistakes and improve tomorrow."
Iqbal had Colorado's low score, and the Buffaloes' first round in the red during the spring season, at 1-under 72. She had a slow start at 2 over through five holes, but scored her first of three birdies on the 346-yard par-4 16th. Iqbal also made birdie on the par-4 1st and par-5 4th before closing out her round with six consecutive pars. She is tied for 15th with four other golfers, two strokes outside the top 10 and three behind the top 3.
Miller and Schalk both shot even-par 73 and are tied with seven other golfers for 20th.
Schalk's 73 was her best in nine rounds dating back to an even-par 72 at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in October. She had the least amount of movement on the day, making par on 14 of 18 holes. After staying even through six, Schalk made the turn to the front and immediately birdied the par-4 1st. She moved to 2 under following a birdie at the par-5 6th, but dropped back to 1 under on the next hole. Schalk added another bogey on the par-4 10th before closing out her round with consecutive pars.
In contrast to Schalk, Miller had the most up-and-down day for the Buffaloes. She started with a bogey at the par-4 12th but responded with back-to-back birdies at the 13th and 14th. A bogey at the par-4 15th brought her back to even where she stayed through eight before embarking on her best stretch of the day.
Miller had three birdies in a five-hole span beginning at the 342-yard par-4 2nd to get to 3 under for the round. Unfortunately, she dropped those three strokes between the 8th and 9th, before recording consecutive pars to end her round. The 73 marked her team-best 13th round of even-par or better this season.
Sumcad, in her first tournament action since the Stanford Intercollegiate in late October, is tied with three others for 29th at 1-over 74. She was even through her first four, and like Iqbal and Schalk, made the most of the turn to the front with a birdie on the 1st. Sumcad fell back to even on the next hole, but gained her second birdie of the round on the 319-yard par-4 5th. She stayed at 1 under through 12 holes, but dropped two strokes with consecutive bogeys on the 10th and 11th.
Junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding is in 59th place after a first round of 13-over 86.
USC's Bailey Shoemaker is the day one leader shooting 6-under 67, one stroke ahead of Arizona's Gile Bite Starkute in second with a 68. Four other golfers are tied for third at 1-under 69.
Colorado will pair with UCLA, No. 18 San Jose State and Oregon State in Tuesday's second round with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. MT. The four groups will begin the round between holes 6-10.
