Buffs Slip One Spot Into Eighth At Pac-12 Preview

February 20, 2024 | Women's Golf

KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado women's golf team is in eighth place after the second round of the Pac-12 Preview, shooting 16-over 308 on the 6,449-yard par 73 Nanea Golf Club, Tuesday.

After playing the Nanea course at even-par on Monday, Colorado had the second-highest round of the day and sits at 16-over 600, eight strokes back of No. 45 Oregon State.

No. 2 Stanford and No. 6 UCLA are tied for the lead at 7-under, 577. The Bruins and Cardinal had the only two under-par team rounds of the day, with UCLA shooting 4 under while Stanford was 3 under. No. 4 Stanford is just one shot back at 6 under in field that features six top 20 teams and another two in the top 50.

"Rough day for the Buffs," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "We started on the tough stretch of holes we finished on yesterday and struggled a bit. Overall, the course was more challenging today with tougher hole locations and firmer greens."

With a shotgun start, the Buffaloes' five golfers started between the 6th and 10th. While the par-5 6th was kind to Colorado on Monday (3 under), the 7th through 10th was not (7 over). The Buffaloes were 13 over on that four-hole stretch in the second round.

Sophomore Morgan Miller is tied for 16th after two rounds following her second straight even-par 73. She was 3 over after eight holes, but fought back to even with a clean round the rest of the way. Miller started the climb back up with a birdie at the par-4 16th. She stayed at 2 over through 15, before consecutive birdies at the par-5 4th and par-4 5th secured her team-best 14th round of even-par or better this season.

"Was impressed by how Morgan fought her way back to even after a rough start," Kelly said.

Graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal is tied for 24th at 3-over 149 after recording a 77 in the second round. Iqbal was 2 over through her first nine holes, but jumped back to even after birdies at the par-4 15th and par-3 17th. Unfortunately, she gave both strokes back with a double bogey on the par-5 18th. Iqbal landed her third birdie of the round at the par-4 1st, but finished out the last four holes at 3 over.

Senior Hailey Schalk had a 79 in the second round and is tied for 36th at 6-over 152. Schalk had a rough start dropping three strokes on the first two holes but settled down to play the back nine at 1 under, recording eight pars and a birdie at the 464-yard par-5 13th. Her return to the front wasn't as kind though, playing holes 1-7 at 4 over.

Freshman Francesca Sumcad is tied for 41st at 7-over 153 following a 79 in the second round. Junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding remained in in 59th at 23 over, improving on her first-round score by three strokes with an 83 on Tuesday.

Stanford's Paula Martin Sampedro is the leader after two rounds at 7-under 139, one stroke better than teammate Sadie Englemann at 6 under. Three others are tied for third at 5 under.

Colorado will pair with No. 20 Arizona, No. 18 San Jose State and Oregon State in Wednesday's final round with a shotgun start at 10:30 a.m. MT. The foursomes will begin the round between holes 6-10, the same five holes the Buffaloes began on Tuesday.
