KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado women's golf team held steady to the eighth spot through the final round of the 2024 Pac-12 Preview, finishing at 28-over-par 904 at the 6,449-yard Nanea Golf Club on Wednesday.
The Buffaloes played four strokes better than their second-round score, shooting 12-over 304 on the final 18 holes.
No. 3 UCLA won the team title at 11-under 865 on the heels of the best team round of the day at 4 under. Top-ranked Stanford, tied with the Bruins for the lead after 36 holes, finished second at 7 under after an even-par final round. No. 20 Arizona, following a 1 under 291 in the final round, finished third at even-par 876.
For the second-straight day, the Buffaloes struggled out of the gate, starting on holes 6-10, which proved to be an Achilles heel of sorts. Colorado's four scoring golfers played that stretch at 11 over, including a pair of double bogeys at the 390-yard par-4 7th.
"Challenging conditions today with fast firm greens and tough hole locations," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. We played No. 8 and 9 better today, but the 7th got the best of us. We definitely need to work on reducing the double bogeys and higher. Once we do that, I think this team has a chance to be very competitive."
To their credit, the Buffaloes would drop just one stroke over the other 14 holes. Colorado's four scoring golfers would make 10 birdies outside that dreaded 7-10 hole stretch.
Graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal recorded Colorado's low 54-hole score placing 12th overall at even-par 219, her team-best fifth top 20 finish of the season. She shot 3-under 70 on Wednesday, her best 18-hole score in the last 13 rounds. Iqbal was 1 over through five, but got back in the red with birdies on a pair of par-4s at the 12th and 14th. She stayed at 1 under through 15 and finished strong with birdies at the par-5 4th and on her final hole, the par-5 6th.
"Sabrina played and excellent round today, very consistent and solid," Kelly said.
Sophomore Morgan Miller finished tied for 25th overall at 5-over 224 after matching her high round of the season with a 78 on Wednesday. Miller had a tough start, recording just her second triple bogey in 21 season rounds – 361 holes played to that point - and fell to 5 over through four holes. At 7 over through seven, she turned the corner with a birdie at the par-5 13th, playing the last half of her round at 2 under.
Senior Hailey Schalk tied for 38th at 10-over 229 after shooting a 77 in the final round. Schalk tied for the tournament lead in pars made with 41 and had 15 of them on Wednesday. Schalk started her round with 10 consecutive pars and moved up to 1 under with a birdie on the longest hole of the course, the 536-yard par-5 18th, but dropped back four strokes on her final seven holes.
Freshman Francesca Sumcad tied for 44th at 13 over 232 after carding a 79. Sumcad's round was highlighted by the team's lone eagle of the tournament at the par-5 18th. She crushed the drive off the tee and found herself just 180-yards out thanks to a nice kick off the undulating hills of the 18th hole. Her second shot landed on the fringe, just 10-yards off the green. Instead of chipping, Sumcad decided to putt from there, banking it in off the flag stick for her team-best fourth eagle on the season.
Junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding finished in 59th at 31 over. She had her best round of the tournament on Wednesday at 8 over 81.
UCLA's Zoe Campos captured medalist honors at 8-under 211, edging out USC's Amari Avery and Stanford's Paula Martin Sampedro who tied for second one stroke back.
Colorado will continue the spring season in a little less than two weeks with the Juli Inkster Spartan Invitational March 4-5. Co-hosted by San Jose State and San Francisco, the Spartan Invitational will be played at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
