Buffs In 11th At Juli Inkster Invitational

March 04, 2024 | Women's Golf

FAIRFAX, Calif. — Colorado women's golf is in 11th place after the first two rounds of the 2024 Juli Inkster Invitational played on the 6,157-yard Meadow Club on Monday.

The Buffaloes shot 14-over 590 on the day and sit just five strokes out of eighth and six out of the top half of the tournament field.

Top-ranked Stanford is the leader after two rounds at 13-under 563, holding a three-stroke lead over No. 40 Washington. No. 8 USC in in third at 6-under 570.

Colorado struggled early on the rain-saturated Meadow Club course, and was in 13th after the first round at 12-over 300. The Buffaloes battled through the chilly, breezy conditions and enjoyed a 10-stroke improvement in the second round, jumping into 11th place.

"We struggled with the speed on the greens," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said "Our putting wasn't very good, but did improve in the afternoon. The team made a nice comeback in the second round, but the 3-putts were our nemesis."

Sophomore Morgan Miller is tied for 12th at 1-under 143. She had the Buffaloes' low round of the day with a 71 in the first and shot even-par 72 in the second. Miller was particularly good on the front nine in both rounds, playing those 18 holes mistake free on the day at 5 under.

Graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal and senior Hailey Schalk are tied for 33rd at 4-over 148. The duo had identical rounds, both shooting 4-over 76 in the first 18 holes and then shaving off four strokes to finish even in the second.

Iqbal made par on 15 of 18 holes in the second round, but a pair of bogeys and a double put her at 76 after one. She got some birdies going in the second round and found herself at 3-under through 12 holes, before dropping back to even down the stretch.

In Schalk's even-par second round, she was 1-over through two holes but then rattled off 10-straight pars before climbing back to even with a birdie on the par-3 11th. She then made par the final six holes to pick up her third even-par round of the season.

Freshman Francesca Sumcad is tied for 59th at 10-over 154 after shooting consecutive rounds of 77. Junior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch is tied for 62nd at 12-over 156.

Eidhagen Harrouch had the best bounce-back round of the day. After an 82 in the first round, she improved by eight strokes in the second.

"The team is determined to move up the leaderboard and clean up a few of the mistakes that hurt us today," Kelly said. "Overall, I'm really proud of the comeback they made in the second round and feel we are on the right path."

Oregon State's Kyra Ly and Washington's Camille Boyd are tied for the two-round lead at 8-under 136. Ly tied for the low round of the day with a 67 in the first round. Boyd shot back-to-back 68s to claim a share of the lead during the afternoon session. Stanford's Paula Martin Sampedro is in third two shots back at 6-under 138.

Colorado will pair with California and San Francisco in Tuesday's final round which begins with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. MT. The groups will tee off between the 12th and 15th.
