Buffs Set for SDSU on Saturday

March 29, 2024 | Lacrosse

BOULDER — The Colorado Buffaloes will be back in Boulder this weekend to take on the San Diego State Aztecs Saturday at 12 p.m. MST, at Kittredge Field.

Buffs head into the matchup with a 6-3 (1-1 Pac-12) overall record while the Aztecs are 1-10 (0-2 Pac-12) and have lost their last nine games.

Colorado earned their first Pac-12 Conference win last week in Berkeley over Cal, and will look for back-to-back wins for a winning conference record. San Diego State is still searching for their first Pac-12 win, after dropping their first two contests to Arizona State and UC Davis.

The New York native — Jess Peluso — locked up her second Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week award after a career-high five caused turnovers and four ground balls. It marks the first time in program history that a CU player has been named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week twice in the same season.

She is the only player in the conference with multiple games of four or more caused turnovers and is also one of two players in the Pac-12 with at least 16 caused turnovers and 15 ground balls on the year.

Madeline Pisani was named a Mid-Season All-American Honorable Mention by Inside Lacrosse earlier in the week. The senior has a conference-leading 32 goals so far through nine games, and is the only player in the Pac-12 with at least 30 goals. She also has five assists and is 12-14 on free position attempts.

CU's Sydney Zimmerman recorded a career-high three goals and her first ever hat trick in the win over Cal last week. Ashley Stokes arguably played her best game of the season thus far, after notching two goals and three assists, for a team-leading five points.

Despite the losing record, the Aztecs are led by Sara Toner and Frankie Garcia, who both have logged 20 or more goals on the season. Toner is tied for 10th in the Pac-12 with 24 goals, while Garcia just reached the 20 goal mark last game.
