Buffs Just Getting Started in Azusa
April 11, 2024 | Track and Field
AZUSA, Calif. – The Colorado men's and women's track and field teams started action on day one of the Bryan Clay Invitational here at Cougar Stadium on Thursday. The Buffaloes saw a total of four multi athletes and six distance runners take part in several events throughout the day.
Both the men's decathlon and women's heptathlon started in the morning to get things going in Azusa. For the Buffs, John Swabik, Troy Colleran and Drake Miller all started competition in the decathlon while Eva Bruce was the lone Colorado athlete in the heptathlon.
Swabik currently sits in third in his decathlon group with 3853 points through the first five events, including a first-place finish in the 400-meters. Colleran is in ninth and Miller is in 11th in their respective groups while Bruce also sits in 11th after her four heptathlon events.
As the multis continued in their respective heptathlon and decathlon events, races started on the track as the evening approached.
Charlie Welch finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:50.86, crushing his previous best of 9:01.79 which he set at last year's Bryan Clay Invitational. Conner Wingfield, Kole Mathison, Caleb Niednagel and Shaw Powell all also ran in the race and put together three top-20 finishes.
Wingfield set a personal best in the 3000S at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic in San Francisco just a couple of weeks ago. Here in Azusa, he shaved almost six seconds off of that time for an 11th-place finish. Powell also set his PR in the 3000S recently at the Colorado Invitational, but today he improved his best by about 40 seconds.
Samree Dishon was the only distance runner on the women's side to compete on day one and she ran well for a fourth-place finish in the 10,000-meters.
Competition at the Bryan Clay Invitational will continue Friday at 8 a.m. MT.
