April 16, 2024 | Women's Golf

BOULDER — Colorado graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal has punched her ticket to the 2024 U.S. Women's Open following a second-place finish at the USGA Championship Qualifying event in El Macero, Calif., on Monday.

Iqbal shot 5-under 139 over 36 holes at the El Macero Country Club to earn her spot at the 79th U.S. Women's Open to be held May 30 through June 2 at the Lancaster (Pa.) Country Club.

A native of San Jose, Calif., Iqbal was one of three qualifiers from Monday's tournament conducted by the Northern California Golf Association. Megha Ganne of Holmdel, N.J., won the event, one-stroke better than Iqbal at 6-under 138. Alexa Melton of Covina, Calif., took the third spot at 4-under 140.

Iqbal was in third place after the first 18 holes shooting 1-under 71. She got off to a good start with three-straight birdies on the third (par 3), fourth (par 4) and fifth (par 5) and stayed at 2 under through eight. Iqbal fell back into the black through 14 at 1 over, but finished strong with birdies at the par-3 16th and par-5 18th to capture her 71.

Iqbal cemented her spot with a 68 in the second round. She was 1 under for the round through the first nine and then exploded for five birdies on the back, including her second of the day at the 16th and then a final one at the par-4 17th. Iqbal's 12 birdies on the day tied for the most in the field.

"The entire team is very proud and happy for Sabrina qualifying for the U.S. Women's Open," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "It is extremely difficult to go through a one-day, 36-hole qualifying against a highly talented field of both pros and amateurs. Sabrina is a very talented, levelheaded, determined player; all of which served her well Monday I'm sure. We are all so excited that we have at least one Buff in the United States Women's Open this coming summer!"

Iqbal will play in her second U.S. Women's Open, qualifying for the 2019 championship at the Country Club of Charleston (S.C.) after her freshman season at TCU. She will be the fifth Buffalo to appear in a U.S. Women's Open, joining Jessica Wallace (2014), Robyn Choi (2017 & '18), Malak Bouraeda (2022) and Jenny Coleman (2023).

A host of current and former Buffaloes will look to join Iqbal in Lancaster later this month at the Colorado Golf Association Qualifier, April 30, at Walnut Creek in Westminster. Sophomore Morgan Miller, freshman Francesca Sumcad and juniors Maria Eidhagen Harrouch and Lauren Waxer-Gooding are scheduled to compete along with former Buffaloes in Haylin Harris and current LPGA members in Choi and Coleman.
