Buffs Open Final Pac-12 Championship In Eighth
April 21, 2024 | Women's Golf
PULLMAN, Wash. — Colorado is in eighth place after the first round of the 2024 Pac-12 Women's Golf Championship after shooting 15 over 303 on a blustery day at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club on Sunday.
Colorado remained well within striking distance of the top half of the leaderboard as all but one team, top-ranked Stanford, finished above par on the day. The Cardinal are the first-round leaders at 2-under 286, holding a seven-shot lead over No. 16 Oregon (+5). Host Washington State is in third at 9-over 297, leaving the Buffaloes just six shots out of the top three.
Colorado had a rough start. The Buffaloes were 3 over right off the first tee and 10 over through the first six holes. The Buffaloes found some love at the 355-yard par-4 seventh as freshman Francesca Sumcad and senior Hailey Schalk picked up Colorado's first birdies of the day.
After finishing the front nine at 9 over, Sumcad and Schalk combined to pick up three strokes for the Buffaloes at the 531-yard par-5 10th. Sumcad made her team-best fifth eagle of the season, one of only five total on the day and the only one at the 10th. Schalk picked up her third birdie of the round at the same hole.
However, the Buffaloes played the next four holes at 7 over, including bogeys for all four scoring golfers at the 386-yard par-4 12th. Schalk, along with juniors Lauren Waxer-Gooding and Maria Eidhagen Harrouch birdied the 306-yard par-4 15th, but the Buffaloes dropped five strokes in the final three holes to finish at 15 over.
"The team overall got off to a rough start on the first few holes, but hung in there very well on a tough day," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "The wind was blowing 20-plus miles an hour all day. Our team did a good job of keeping themselves in the round, managing their emotions and battling through every shot on a challenging day. Our team definitely has room for improvement tomorrow. After some well deserved rest tonight, we will be ready to go and hope to move up the leaderboard."
Sumcad had Colorado's low round of the day at 2-over, 74 and is tied for 13th overall just four shots off the lead on a day where no one shot in the 60s. Her eagle at the 10th put her in great shape at 2 under, but dropped back to even with back-to-back bogeys at the 11th and 12th. She remained at even through 17, but fell out of the top 10 with a double-bogey on the 492-yard par-5 18th.
Schalk and Waxer-Gooding are tied with five others for 30th after shooting a 76 in the first round. Eidhagen Harrouch is tied for 37th at 5-over 77. Graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal is tied for 49th at 9 over.
Washington State's Madelyn Gamble and USC's Catherine Park are tied for the lead after 18 holes at 2-under 70. Oregon's Karen Tsuru and the Stanford duo of Megha Ganne and Rachel Heck are one shot back after carding 71.
Colorado will pair with Washington in Monday's second round. The Buffaloes and Huskies will start on the back at the 10th tee, beginning at 10:20 a.m. MT.
