Buffs Open Chevron Silverado Showdown In 16th

April 08, 2024 | Women's Golf

NAPA, Calif. — Colorado women's golf is in 16th place after the first round of the 2024 Chevron Silverado Showdown played at the Silverado Resort and Spa on Monday.

The Buffaloes recorded their high team round of the season at 29-over-par 317 and find themselves in last place, 11 shots out of 15th through the first 18 holes.

No. 9 ranked USC is the leader after round one after shooting 6-under 282, three shots ahead of No. 11 Northwestern (285). No. 17 Pepperdine was the only other team to shoot in the red in the first round at 1-under 287.

Very little went right for Colorado on Monday. The Buffaloes had a total of seven birdies, five of those coming from graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal. Colorado, which had in general avoided the big numbers this spring, had double-bogeys by all five golfers contributing to the team score. Three of Colorado's five in the lineup shot in the 80s.

Iqbal had Colorado's low round of the day and is tied for 35th at 2-over 74. Her five birdies on the day were offset by five bogeys and a double right out of the gate at the par-4 1st. Iqbal was able to play the rest of the round at even, highlighted by back-to-back birdies at the par-4 8th and par-5 9th.

Sophomore Morgan Miller recorded her 20th round in the 70s of the season at 4-over 76. Miller had a team-best 13 pars in the round. Three bogeys and a double at the par-5 5th had her at 5 over, but she closed out her round on a high note with her lone birdie on the day at the par-5 18th to finish in a tie for 61st overall.

Senior Hailey Schalk is tied for 10th at 10-over 82, and like Miller, ended her round with a birdie on the 18th. Freshman Francesca Sumcad is in 87th after shooting 13-over 85. Junior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch is in 88th at 14-over.

"Everyone was incredibly disappointed in today's play," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "We need to learn quickly from this round and turn things around tomorrow. This team is capable of much better play, we will regroup and be determined to play better in round two."
Freshman Carolyn Fuller is one of four golfers, including Schalk, tied for 82nd at 10 over. Junior Lauren Waxer-Gooding is in 86th place at 12 over. Both are competing as individuals.

Northwestern's Dianna Lee is the individual leader after round one shooting 5-under 67. She has a one-stroke lead over USC's Brianna Navarrosa. Four golfers are tied for third, two-shots back at 69.

Colorado will pair with San Francisco, No. 45 Oregon State and No. 25 California in Tuesday's second round. The groups will start off the 10th tee, beginning at 10:42 a.m. MT.
