Buffs Hold In 16th At Chevron Silverado Showdown
April 09, 2024 | Women's Golf
NAPA, Calif. — Colorado women's golf remained in 16th place after two rounds of the 2024 Chevron Silverado Showdown, shooting 24-over 312 on Tuesday at the Silverado Resort and Spa North Course.
Colorado had a slightly better day on Tuesday, shooting five strokes better than Monday, to sit at 53-over 629 through two rounds.
No. 9 USC is the only team in the red through two rounds at 3-under 573 and holds a nine-stroke lead over No. 14 Arizona at 6 over. No. 11 Northwestern is in third at 8 over while No. 17 Pepperdine is one shot back at 9 over.
While Colorado had the high team round for the second straight day, the field overall had a tougher time on Tuesday. The North Course, which will host the PGA's Fortinet Championship in September, played a full stroke higher with an average of 75.8, than it did during Monday's first round (74.7). All 16 teams played over par in the second round with exactly half the field shooting double-figures over par.
Colorado got off to a good start in the second round. Beginning on the back, the four golfers that contributed to the team score had five of the rounds' eight birdies between the 10th and 13th holes. The Buffaloes' scorers combined to shoot even on the back nine with graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal and sophomore Morgan Miller both shooting 1 under through nine.
Unfortunately, Colorado couldn't sustain that momentum at the turn. The Buffaloes went without a birdie on the front, had 14 bogeys and five double-bogeys to drop to 24 over for the round.
Iqbal had Colorado's low round for the second-straight day with a 75 and is tied for 38th overall at 5-over 149. Iqbal opened with a birdie at the 375-yard par-4 10th and stayed at 1 under through 11 holes, making 10-straight pars. She dropped four strokes over a three-hole span beginning at the par-4 3rd before ending her round with four-consecutive pars.
Miller carded a 76 for the second-straight day and moved up two spots into a four-way tie for 59th place at 8-over 152. Miller had Colorado's best run of the day, opening her round with three birdies in a four-hole stretch including back-to-back on a pair of par 4s at the 12th and 13th, to get to 3 under. She dropped back to even before getting back into the red at the turn with her fourth birdie of the day at the par-5 18th. Miller played the front at 5 over.
Senior Hailey Schalk shot an 81 on Tuesday and is in 84th place overall at 19-over 163. Junior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch took six shots off her first-round score and is 85th at 22-over 166. Freshman Francesca Sumcad is in 87th at 25-over 169.
Freshman Carolyn Fuller, playing as an individual, shot a 79 in the second round and is in 83rd place at 17-over 161. Lauren Waxer-Gooding is in 86th at 24-over, 168.
"We really got off to a great start," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "The first nine was quite good, but then we made the turn and the second nine was extremely tough for the team and it's hard to pin point why. They are all competing extremely hard but it's been a tough go. Tomorrow the plan is to go out and give it our all and hopefully leave here on a positive note."
San Jose State's Kajsa Arwefjall and USC's Catherine Park are tied for the individual lead at 5-under 139. Arwefjall vaulted 25 spots in the standings after recording the low round of the tournament so far with a 66 on Tuesday. Hsin Chun Liao of Texas and Northwestern's Lauryn Nguyen are four shots back at 1 under.
Colorado will pair with San Francisco, No. 31 Washington and No. 46 Iowa State in Wednesday's final round. The groups will begin between the 14th and 17th tees with a shotgun start set for 9:30 a.m. MT.
