Buffs Finish 16th At Silverado
April 10, 2024 | Women's Golf
NAPA, Calif. — Colorado women's golf had its best of three days, finishing off the 2024 Chevron Silverado Showdown in 16th place after shooting 7-over, 295 on Wednesday at the Silverado Resort and Spa North Course.
The Buffaloes shook off two days of struggles, bettering its second-round score by 17 strokes. Colorado completed the event at 60-over 924.
No. 9 USC and No. 11 Northwestern tied for the team title at 4-over 868. The Wildcats had the only team round in the red on the day at 4 under, erasing an 11-stroke deficit to catch the Trojans. No. 14 Arizona finished a distant third at 11 over.
Colorado found its scoring touch in the final round with 12 birdies and an eagle by sophomore Morgan Miller at the par-4 12th. The Buffaloes had just 15 birdies – and no eagles - in the first two rounds combined.
Colorado largely avoided the big numbers, with just one hole at double-bogey on the day. The Buffaloes also solved the front nine which had been a thorn in their sides. After shooting 24 over on the front with zero birdies on Tuesday, Colorado shaved a whopping 20 strokes off that mark Wednesday, including seven birdies.
"Much better round today, showing more of what we're capable of," Colorado head coach Anne Kelly said. "Proud of the way everyone continued to fight. We didn't give up and I think that makes everyone feeling better leaving the event on a much higher note.
"It's a difficult course and the field was really good too. Just a great golf course to get everyone ready for their conference championships."
Graduate senior Sabrina Iqbal recorded Colorado's low 54-hole score at 5-over 221, tying for 27th overall. She shot even-par 72 in the third round, which was also the Buffaloes' low round of the tournament.
Starting at the 14th, Iqbal was even through five and had her best stretch at the beginning of the front nine. She had back-to-back birdies at the par-4 1st and par-3 2nd to get to 2 under. She remained at 2 under through 10 holes before slipping back to even with consecutive bogeys at the 6th and 7th. Iqbal played even from there highlighted by a birdie at the 12th.
Miller tied for 48th overall at 9-over 225 following her best of three rounds with a 1 over 73 on Wednesday. Beginning at the 15th, Miller was 4 over through eight and remained there through 11 before finishing strong. She had back-to-back birdies at the par-4 8th and par-5 9th to climb to 2 over.
After a bogey-5 at the 10th and a par-3 at 11, Miller attacked the par-4 12th. Playing at 261 yards, Miller "hit the best drive I could from the tee," ending up pin-high and draining the chip from about 10 yards out for her fourth eagle of the season. She closed out even over her final two holes.
Senior Hailey Schalk and freshman Carolyn Fuller tied for 83rd at 23-over 239. Schalk had her best of three rounds with a 76 on Wednesday highlighted with a birdie on the 138-yard par-3 11th.
Fuller, playing as an individual, shot a 78 in the final round and had Colorado's best finish of the day. She had a double-bogey out of the gate on the 18th and was 9 over through nine. She rallied from there, playing the last nine at 3 under including back-to-back birdies to end her round on the par-5 16th and par-4 17th.
Junior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch placed 85th overall at 26-over 242. She carded a 76 on Wednesday to finish strong after a couple scores in the 80s in the first two rounds.
Freshman Francesca Sumcad had a strong finish as well, recording a 74 in the final round after two days in the 80s. She placed 86th overall, one shot back of Eidhagen Harrouch at 27-over 243.

Colorado will be back in action in a little over a week at the 2024 Pac-12 Championship, April 21-23, in Pullman, Wash.
