Hertenstein Highlights First Day of Conference Championships
May 10, 2024 | Track and Field
BOULDER – At the final Pac-12 Track and Field Championships, the University of Colorado men's and women's track and field teams soaked in a successful day of marks here at Potts Field on Friday.
After a rainy and cloudy start to the meet, the weather cleared up slowly but surely throughout the day to make for a great atmosphere at the newly renovated facility. The stands filled in and the crowd raged on as thousands of fans from all over the conference traveled to Boulder for the championships.
"It turned out to be a great day," head coach Mark Wetmore said. "We managed to get through the weather and it was nothing different than any other typical problems. So yeah, so far so good."
The Buffaloes had several great performances trickling in on both the field and on the track. Avery McMullen started off hot for the Buffs, finishing first in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter. She also placed second in the high jump to put her in second among all heptathletes competing.
Jada Green picked up right where McMullen left off by finishing second in the women's javelin. She qualified for the finals along with eight other competitors after throwing for a distance of 48.55m on her third attempt. However, Green saved her best toss for last, throwing for a monster mark of 51.65m and jumping up to second place.
Later on, Colorado started to find its groove on the track with multiple qualifiers and a Pac-12 Champion wearing the Black and Gold. In the second to last event of the day, Bailey Hertenstein became the Pac-12 Champ in the women's 10,000 after finishing in dominating fashion to take the title by a margin of 25 seconds. Hertenstein had never competed in the 10,000 at the collegiate level until this evening.
"She wasn't thrilled about doing it," Wetmore joked. "We had to sit the whole team down and say 'this is the conference. This is what we talked about all year and it's money time,' and she bit the bullet and then was brilliant. So I hope she enjoyed it."
Samree Dishon also reached the podium, finishing the race in 34:46.05 for second place. Abbey Nechanicky and Katie Doucette were the other Buffs scorers, combining for seven points.
The 10,000 allowed the Buffs to take the lead in the women's standings after the first day of competition. They sit in first with 37 points followed by UCLA with 27 and Arizona with 20.
The Colorado men are in sixth place after day one, however, there were some solid performances for them on the track. All three Buffs in the men's 1500-meter qualified for the finals and will race again on Sunday. Garrett Nelson and Colton Romig also qualified for the finals in the 400-meter hurdles.
The Pac-12 Championships continue on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and are scheduled to run till shortly after 6 p.m.
