July 17, 2024 | Volleyball
LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Colorado women's volleyball team received the AVCA Team Academic Award sponsored by INTENT for the fifth-straight year, as announced by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Wednesday, July 17.
Sponsored by INTENT for the first time and in collaboration with the AVCA, the Buffs were part of a record-setting over 1,400 collegiate and high school volleyball teams chosen for the honor. The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors volleyball teams that maintain a year-long grade-point average of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or 4.1 on a 5.0 scale.
"We are pleased that the record-setting success of the 2023-24 season on the court has extended to the classroom, too, as evidenced by more programs earning the Team Academic Award than ever before," says AVCA CEO Jaime Gordon. "This is a great example of how committed our coaches are when it comes to helping their players reach their full potential as both students and athletes."
Under ninth-year head coach Jesse Mahoney, Colorado earned a winning record in the 2023 season (16-15) and went 8-12 against Pac-12 opponents. A significant win for the Buffs took place against 17th-ranked Arizona State last year. The Buffs took down the Sun Devils in three sets, completing the sweep and earning CU's only win against a ranked opponent in the 2023 season. Colorado also swept Arizona (Oct. 20) and Washington (Nov. 19) and finished seventh in the Pac-12.
