Buffaloes In Second In WSU's Palouse Collegiate
PULLMAN, Wash. — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened its 102nd season of intercollegiate golf here Tuesday by posting its best opening- and 36-hole scores in its history, as the Buffaloes are in second in Washington State's Cougar Classic.
Two former Pac-12 conference colleagues of the Cougars, now in the Big 12, are a top the standings with Utah in the lead with a 36-under team score of 532, with the Buffaloes 10 shots back at 26-under 542. Ten back of Colorado, four teams are in at 16-under 552, including host Washington State, Sacramento State, San Jose State and Wyoming.
The Buffaloes, ranked 25th in Golf Channel's preseason poll, recorded their best-ever score in the first round of a new season with a 12-under 272, and then came back with a 14-under 270. That tied the third-best 18-hole gross score by a CU team, matching the second on a par-71 configuration. The 26-under 542 total is the best-ever after 36 holes in school annals, easily besting the previous low of 22-under 546 after two rounds in Hawai'i's 2021 Ka'anapali Classic.
The 12-under 272 score in the opening round was the best-ever in CU history to open a season in relation to par, besting the 9-under 271 the Buffaloes shot in the 1979 Oklahoma City University All-College Classic; that 271 is the only lower gross score. It's also just the eighth time CU's first round of the season was under par, with two others at even-par.

Junior Hunter Swanson is tied for third after fashioning a 10-under 65-67—132 scorecard, the second time in college had two scores in the 60s in consecutive rounds in the same tournament. With six birdies and 12 pars in the morning round on the 7,302-yard, par-71 Palouse Ridge Golf Club layout, he tied the school record for the lowest score in an opening round of any season in Buffalo history. In fact, he began his third year as a Buffalo with 28 straight holes of par or better before scoring his first and only bogey on Tuesday. He was consistent across the board, as he was under par on all holes: 4-under on the par-4s and par-5s, and 2-under on the par-3s.
The 65 matched his collegiate-career best, which he recorded in the second round of last year's Maui Jim Individual in Scottsdale; that was the other occasion he scored with back-to-back rounds in the 60s.

Senior Dylan McDermott is sixth after posting a 9-under 70-63—133 scorecard, with his second round effort tying two others for the best single-round score in CU's long history. After a morning round when he had two birdies and 15 pars, he caught fire the second time around the Palouse Ridge track, making an eagle, eight birdies and seven pars with just bogeys; the eight birds matched his career single round high. He actually started the second round with a bogey on No. 6, and then birdied five of the next six holes; he shot 31 on the front nine and 32 on the back side. He tore up the par-4s Tuesday as he was 7-under on the 18 combined (8-under in round two).
His 63 was also the lowest score ever recorded by a Buff in the first tournament of a season, bettering a 35-year old mark set in 1989 by John Nyuli in Wyoming's Red Jacoby Invitational when he shot a 6-under 64. It was also the lowest score in Tuesday's second round.

Sophomore Brandon Knight is tied for 11th after he put a 66-71—137 (5-under) into the books; he enjoyed a steady two rounds with 11 birdies and 19 pars opposite six bogeys. His opening round 66 tied for the third-best first round of the season in CU annals, and it was also the best score of his collegiate career to date, topping a 67 which he also had in last year's season opener in the final round of the Maui Jim Individual. He played the par-5s the best at 6-under Tuesday, and was even on the par-4's. Knight and Swanson had a team-high 11 birdies.
