CU Women’s Golf Endowment Created In Honor Of Coach Kelly
September 13, 2024 | Women's Golf
BOULDER – Anne Kelly made an incredible impact on the women's golf team at the University of Colorado over her 27-year career as head coach.
Now, months after her official retirement from coaching, that legacy will continue to live on through the Anne Kelly Women's Golf Endowment.
Founded by Randy and Linda Miller, long-time supporters of Colorado Athletics, the Anne Kelly Women's Golf Endowment will help to provide ancillary support for the women's golf program.
"As friends of the women's golf program and Anne Kelly, we thought the best way to honor her legacy and the team would be to create this endowment fund," said the Millers in a joint statement. "We want to encourage other people to add to it as well, so the fund continues to grow and remains sustainable."
"I was totally surprised and overwhelmed that the Millers would start this," said Kelly, who first learned about the planned endowment at her retirement party this spring. "It means the world to me to be able to have this program, that I worked so many years for, be in good financial shape like this. The goal is to be fully funded, so no matter what the financial situation is, women's golf will be part of Colorado Athletics."
The endowment will enhance the student-athlete experience of current and future Buffaloes through improved training trips, leadership experiences and team building to name a few opportunities. For example, the Buffaloes used endowment funds to attend a fall team retreat in the Vail Valley over Labor Day weekend. During the retreat, they played the Summit Course at Cordillera and the Fazio Course at Red Sky Ranch and focused on culture building activities in between.
"The fall team retreat was an incredible way to kick off the season," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "This was almost everyone's first trip to the Vail Valley, so it was special to introduce them to some of the best golf in the state and the epic Colorado scenery. Bruce and Becky Gamble, friends of CU Athletics, hosted us at Cordillera and for dinner afterwards. They created such a positive, welcoming atmosphere for the new and returning Buffs."
Additionally, the Buffaloes used the Saturday morning as a team building session to get to know each other, define team values and set goals for the season. Along with cooking meals and the time spent together in their rental house, "the group is feeling connected and ready to work together to achieve our goals."
"The Anne Kelly Women's Golf Endowment fund is what made this weekend possible," Sheils said. "We are so grateful to be able to host an experience like this for the team because it builds camaraderie, develops our culture and creates lifelong memories for these players."
