Three CU players in contention for medalist honors

PHOENIX — The University of Colorado men's golf team sent four players here to participate in Arizona State's Papago Individual, with three members of the quartet in the top seven after two rounds of play Tuesday.

Senior Freddy Eisenbeis is third after posting a 2-under, 69-71—140 scorecard on the 7,551-yard, par-71 Papago Golf Course set-up.  His 69 was just one of three rounds in the 60s in the first round and one of just seven overall.  He was solid all day, tying for the team-high nine birdies with 20 pars and seven bogeys.

Senior Jack Holland is tied for fifth with an even-par 70-72—142 effort.  He had a rough start, standing at 4-over par after seven holes and making the turn with a 40 total; he was still 4-over through 12 when he went on a birdie-binge, scoring five in the last seven holes to get under par for the round.  The 30 on the back nine marked the eighth known time in school history a Buffalo scored a 30 on either the front or a back nine.  He also had nine birdies with 19 pars, seven bogeys and a double.

Sophomore Ty Holbrook is tied for seventh with a 1-over 71-72—143 performance.  He had CU's lone eagle on the day, in the second round and one of just three all day, and it came on the par-4 5th hole when he drove it about 370 yards to within 10 yards to the left of the green and chipped in.  He had six birdies and 21 pars opposite seven bogeys and a double otherwise.

Freshman Michael Fang made his collegiate debut, struggling in the first round with an 8-over 79; but he rebounded strong with an even-par 71 in the afternoon for a 150 total, that has him tied for 21st.  He didn't record any big numbers, as he had two birdies, 24 pars and 10 bogeys, which included 16 pars in the second round.

"In general, a nice day for the boys," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Jack was really good all day after his first seven holes.  Along with Freddy and Ty, all are right there in the mix for medalist honors.  Michael had a tough first round, but rebounded nicely his second time around Papago."

Two Arizona State Sun Devils are atop the leaderboard, with Pongsapak "Fifa" Laopakdee leading with a 5-under 69-68—137, one shot ahead of Michael Mjaaseth (68-71—139).

The final round is Tuesday morning starting at 8:45 a.m. off the number 1 tee.  The remainder of the team will be in Fort Collins to play in Colorado State's Ram Masters Invitational, which will have 36 holes Tuesday (shotgun start at 8 a.m. for 16 teams; CU is paired with Long Beach State and Wyoming) and the final 18 on Wednesday at Fort Collins Country Club.

NOTES: There are no team scores as it's a tournament for individuals, more of which are springing up around the nation to provide more opportunities for players in competition … There are 32 players competing from 10 different schools The average score for all 64 rounds Tuesday was 73.78 … The previous seven players to score a 30 on a side included: Steve Jones, 1980 Sun Devil-Thunderbird Invitational (back nine); John Nyuli, 1989 Wyoming-Red Jacoby Invitational (back nine); Justin Bardgett, 2010 Barona Collegiate Cup (front nine); Yannik Paul, 2018 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate (front nine); Kristoffer Max, 2021 Southern Colorado Masters (front nine); Jack Hughes, 2021 Ka'anapali Classic (back nine); and Tucker Clark, 2022 Ka'anapali Classic (back nine) … Fifa Laopakdee, who hails from Thailand, might have the most unique name in college golf.
