Men's Golfers Tied For Second In CSU Ram Masters Invitational

September 17, 2024 | Men's Golf

Justin Biwer latest to tie CU single round school record of 63

FORT COLLINS — The University of Colorado men's golf team continued its solid play to open the season, as the Buffaloes are in a second place tie after Tuesday's first two rounds in CSU's Ram Masters Invitational.

Utah Tech (formerly Dixie State) is in the lead with a 13-under 547 team score, which is good for a four-stroke edge over the Buffaloes and host Colorado State, both with 9-under 551 tallies.  Idaho, Long Beach State and Utah Valley are tied for fourth, 10 back with 3-under 557 scores.  Colorado had led by five strokes over CSU after the morning round after opening with a 12-under 268, the fourth straight sub-280 score to open the new season.

Senior Justin Biwer led for much of the day until having a few holes not go his way in the second round, but he opened with a 7-under 63 after scoring seven birdies and 11 pars on the 7,049-yard, par-70 Fort Collins Country Club course, tying the CU record for the low single round in the process.  After shooting a 3-over 73 the second time around the FCC track, he's tied for third with a 4-under 136, six out of the lead.  His previous best was a 65 on two occasions, including one last week in Washington.  Overall on the day, he had a team-high 13 birdies, with 16 pars, five bogeys and two doubles.

Biwer said he "hit the ball super-well into the greens," noting that he had just 25 putts in the morning.  "My longest birdies was from 17 feet on 7, otherwise every other birdie was inside 10 feet."  It obviously helped him to play the par-4s a CU-best Tuesday at 4-under.

After waiting 19 years for someone to equal the first 63 in CU history scored by Edward McGlasson in 2005, three players have now matched it in this calendar year, two of those seven days apart:

*—round played over two days, as 14 holes were completed before play was suspended for darkness on Jan. 31.
Junior Hunter Swanson is tied for fifth after fashioning a 3-under 67-70—137 performance; it was his fourth straight round in the 60s and was in the hunt for a fifth but he bogeyed his last hole.  Still, it was the ninth time in program history a player recorded four straight sub-70 scores.  He had an eagle, three birdies and a team-high 30 pars, with just a couple of bogeys.

Biwer and Swanson both had impressive runs of holes scored in succession of par or better; dating back to last week's Palouse Collegiate in Pullman, Biwer reached 33 straight holes, his career best, when he remained bogey-free for the first 19 holes. But he had an uncharacteristic rollercoaster stretch on the back nine in the afternoon, where he went double-bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie-par-bogey.  Swanson hit 32 in a row by scoring par or better for the first 27 holes Tuesday; he owns the school record of 42 he set last year.  And with both opening with bogey-free rounds, it was the third time for each in their Buff careers.

Senior Dylan McDermott is tied for 17th after he posted a 69-70—139 scorecard, with his two eagles in the first round tying the school mark that has been accomplished several times.  That aided him in playing the six par-5 holes on the day at 6-under, the best by a Buff.  He otherwise had six birdies, 21 pars, six bogeys and a triple, the latter on a par-3 that prevented him from recording one of the day's lowest scores in the morning.

Sophomore Brandon Knight recorded a 73-70—143 effort, 3-over par, that has him tied for 47th.    He had seven birdies, 20 pars, eight bogeys and a double on Tuesday, playing the par-5's the best at 4-under.  He was 2-over after three holes, but settled down quick to play the next 33 at just 1-over.

Senior Tucker Clark opened strong but had a tough time in the afternoon, logging a 69-79—148 score (8-over par), which has him tied for 56th.  He had four birdies and 11 pars in the first round, but had seven holes worse than par in the afternoon that inflated his score; he had six birdies and 20 pars overall, but was 1-under on the par-5s and even on the par-3s.

Freshman Parker Paxton is competing here as an individual (his score does not count toward CU's team total); it's also his first collegiate tournament.  He opened with an even-par 70, which tied for the fifth-best gross score in the first round in college by a Buffalo, and tied for seventh for a score in relation to par.  He had a 4-over 74 the second time around the loop, and stands tied for 56th with a 4-over 144 total.  He was for the most part consistent in his first college action, with seven birdies, 18 pars and 11 bogeys.

"The morning we played very, very well, Justin especially." CU associate head coach Derek Tolan said (he accompanied the team here while head coach Roy Edwards took four individuals to Arizona). "He was off to races right out the gate and that was fun to sit back and just watch him.  In the afternoon, we did a good job of battling through.  We have a half hour in the middle of the round where like a squall came through, raining heavy and the wind had to be blowing 30 to 40 miles per hour.  It was unfortunate timing, as it hit when he had some birdie-able holes, but the guys did a good job of hanging in there.  We didn't have our best stuff in the afternoon, but the guys never took their feet off the gas."

Valparaiso's Anthony Delisanti and CSU's Jake Rodgers are tied for the individual lead, as both posted identical 10-under 67-63—130 scores.

The third and final round is set for Wednesday; most of the Buffaloes will be paired with Utah Tech, others with Colorado State and Long Beach State, starting at 9:54 a.m. off the number 1 tee.

PAPAGO INDIVIDUAL AT PHOENIX: Four players participated in Arizona State's Papago Individual over the last two days, with all four Buffaloes finishing with top 20 finishes which concluded Wednesday.

Senior Freddy Eisenbeis finished third, closing with a 2-under 69 that polished off a 4-under 209 effort on the 7,551-yard, par-71 Papago Golf Course layout.  He was four shots back of the co-medalists, Arizona State's Fifa Laopakdee and Michael Mjaaaseth.  Eisenbeis had a team-best 15 birdies with 28 pars and 11 bogeys here in the Valley of the Sun.

Senior Jack Holland tied for 11th after he wrapped things with a 4-over 75 for a 4-over 217 total.  He had a birdie and 13 pars opposite three bogeys and a double in the final round.

Freshman Zeqian "Michael" Fang made his collegiate debut, and rebounded strong from an opening 79 to fashion a 3-under 68 that vaulted him into the top 20 in a tie for 16th.  He had an eagle, four birdies and 10 pars with just three bogeys as his 68 tied for the seventh-best score in a tournament in the first college event as a Buffalo.

Sophomore Ty Holbrook struggled in the last round, finished with a 9-over 80 that landed him in 19th place with a 10-over 223 scorecard.  He had two birdies and 10 pars with three bogeys, but the bulk of his troubles could be traced to two doubles and a quadruple.

"Freddy had a really nice tournament; 4-under here is very good, and he looked great doing it," Edwards said.  "Zeqian had a good day shooting 3-under; that was much more like his regular game."

NOTES: The weather was good at the on-set, the high temperature reaching 81 degrees before a storm system moved in, dropping the temp into the upper 60s with heavy rain at times starting early in the second rounds before it let up …  The Buffaloes opened their 102nd season of intercollegiate golf with a second place finish in last week's Palouse Collegiate in Pullman … Tuesday's first round marked the 10th time the Buffaloes had all four scorers in the 60's, the eighth time in the Roy Edwards Era … The average score for all 184 rounds Tuesday was 71.72; it was a shade lower in the afternoon (71.47) than in the morning (71.98) … There are just 21 players under par with three others even; Utah Tech has four players in red numbers, CU, CSU and Utah Valley three each … The Buff scorers had three eagles, 35 birdies and 107 pars in all, with 44 holes worse than par … Colorado collectively played the par-5's at 14-under, the par-4's at 4-over and the par-3's at 9-over … The best score in a first collegiate round by a Buffalo remains a 5-under 67 by Sebastian Heisele, which he recorded in Denver's Ron Moore Invitational on Sept. 15, 2008 … CU's record for the most consecutive rounds in the 60s is held by the Paul twins, Jeremy over three tournaments in 2016 and Yannik over two in 2018; McDermott has the next best run of five (in 2023) … Colorado is now 55-13-4 against Division I competition when it comes to individual rounds; CU is looking to build on its overall mark of 13-1 it established last week … In the Papago, the average score for all 96 rounds was 73.35; 32 players competed from 10 different schools (just three players finished under par) … Fang's 68 tied the third low score in the final round, with Eisenbeis' 69, those were two of nine sub-70 scores on the day … Fang had an eagle on a par-4, the third one this young season by a Buff; Holbrook and McDermott have the others.
