Three Buffaloes Finish In Top 15
FORT COLLINS — The University of Colorado men's golf team didn't get on a tear as hoped in the final round but still finished in a tie for third here Wednesday as Colorado State's Ram Masters Invitational came to a close.
Host CSU rallied to win its own event, utilizing the best single rounds of the three – a 13-under 267 – to finish with a 22-under team score of 818. Utah Tech (formerly Dixie State), the second round leader, finished second four strokes back with an 822 score. The Buffaloes, the first round leader, tied for third with Long Beach State with 9-under 831 scores, while Rice rounded out the top five at 832.
Colorado was 4-under at one point during the final round, but eventually finished with an even-par 280.
Senior Justin Biwer paced the Buffalo attack here, finishing with a 2-under 68 for an overall 6-under 204 total, which tied him for fourth individually. He had three birdies and 14 pars in the final round, with his only bogey coming late on the 17th hole. His 16 birdies over the two days were the most by a Buffalo on the 7,049-yard, par-70 Fort Collins Country Club course. He also had 30 pars with six bogeys and two doubles, as he played the par-4s the best at 5-under. It was the fifth top five finish in his career, and with two rounds in the 60s including his record-tying 63 in the opening round here, he now has 35 for his career.
Junior Hunter Swanson tied for ninth after finishing up with a 1-under 69 for a 4-under 206 overall scorecard. He was steady both days, with an eagle, seven birdies and 41 pars with just five bogeys (he had four, 11 and three, respectively, in the final round). He played the par-3s the best of the Buffs at 2-under, and fared well on the par-5s (5-under). He now has seven consecutive rounds of par or better scores dating back to last season.
Senior Dylan McDermott posted his sixth straight round of par or better to open his final season at CU with a second consecutive even-par 70, as he tied for 15th with a 1-under 209. For the event, he scored two eagles, 10 birdies and 32 pars with eight bogeys, a double and a triple. He bookended playing the par-4 holes even with a CU-best 8-under on the par-5s, but was 7-over on the par-3s.
Sophomore Brandon Knight placed in a tie for 55th after closing with a 3-over 73 for a 6-over 216 total. He had 10 birdies and 30 pars opposite 12 bogeys and two doubles, and played the par-5s the second best of the Buff contingent at 6-under.
Senior Tucker Clark finished 84th with a 13-over 223 total, as he had his struggles over the last two rounds after opening with a 69; he closed with a 5-over 75, with 13 pars and five bogeys in the final round. He had six birdies and 33 pars overall, but endured 12 bogeys, two doubles and a triple.
Freshman Parker Paxton competed individually and finished 72nd with a 10-over 220 total in his first collegiate tournament. He managed a birdie, which he began his day with the par-5 1st hole, and 12 pars against three bogeys and two doubles in his final round, a 6-over 76.
"Third place is always a good event, but it was a bit of a disappointing day," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The guys really competed, but it seemed like we were almost trying too hard at times. We saw plenty of good things, but at times it was a bit of a 'two steps forward, one step back kind of deal.'
"Nice events for Justin and Hunter – Dylan wasn't at his best but still managed to finish well," Edwards added. "We head out immediately for the Tucker and it will be good to get right back out and compete. I am sensing we will have a really good event in Albuquerque."
Valparaiso's Anthony Delisanti captured medalist honors, finishing with a 67 for a 13-under 197 total. That topped CSU's Jake Rodgers, who also closed with a 67 and was four back at 9-under 201.
The Buffaloes were flying out to Albuquerque Wednesday night to play in New Mexico's William Tucker Intercollegiate this Friday and Saturday. Biwer, Hunter, McDermott, Knight and Paxton will remain on the travel team, with Freddy Eisenbeis, who led four CU players in Arizona State's Papago Individual, will join the team as a designated scorer with Paxton to compete individually again.
NOTES: No weather issues as was the case Tuesday, sunny skies prevailed with the temperature in the 70s most of the day … There were two hole-in-ones Wednesday, by CSU Fullerton's William Tanaka and Northern Colorado's Takata Imoto, and the rarest of the rare, an albatross by CSU's Jake Rodgers (a 2 on a par 5) … For the first time in program history, CU's individual leader posted a sub-210 total in the first three tournaments of a season and for the third time the team best player was subpar (along with 2012 and 2022) … The average score for all 275 rounds was 71.70; it was a shade lower in the final round (71.65) … There were just 17 players that finished under par with six others with an even 210 score; CSU had four players in red numbers, with CU and Utah Tech three each and Rice with two … The freshman Paxton started strong – an even-par 70 – which tied for the fifth-best gross score in the first round in college by a Buffalo (and tied for seventh for a score in relation to par) … CU did open strong with a 12-under 268, which marked the 10th time the Buffaloes had all four scorers in the 60's, the eighth time in the Roy Edwards Era … The five Buff designated scorers had three eagles, 49 birdies and 166 pars overall (61 holes worse than par) … Colorado collectively played the par-5's at 21-under, the par-4's at 10-over and the par-3's at 15-over … Biwer's first round 63 tied the school record for the low gross score for a single round, now done four times, but three times in the last nine months … He added to his CU best rounds of par or better, now with 78; McDermott's three increased his total to 69 … Swanson's seven consecutive rounds of par or better, dating back to an even-par 71 in the final round of last April's Pac-12 Championship, is tied for the sixth-longest streak in school history; McDermott owns the record with 12 late during the 2022-23 season … The Buffs are now 25-3-1 against Division I competition, their best start since 2013, when they started 24-2-1.
