FORT COLLINS, Colo. — First-year Colorado women's golfers Sydney Givens and Ellen O'Shaughnessy put together strong rounds in their second career starts to lead the Buffaloes into sixth place after day one of the Colonel Wollenberg Classic on Monday at Ptarmigan Golf Course.
The Buffaloes, who certainly had their share of ups and downs throughout Monday's 36 holes, finished at 2-over 578 on the day, two shots behind Nevada. Colorado was 2-over in the opening round and shot even over the final 18 holes.
Monday was dominated by a pair of California schools. UC Davis holds the team lead at 13-under 563 with Cal Poly one shot back at 12-under. Colorado State is a distant third at 4-under with CSU Fullerton in fourth at 3-under.
Givens is in a four-way tie for 15th place at 2-under 142. She opened the day with a respectable 1-over 73, but really caught fire in the afternoon with a 3-under 69.
The second round didn't start off great for Givens who, beginning at the second with the shotgun start, was 2-over through four, but she would birdie three of the next four holes to end the front and climb back into the red for the round and even on the day. She had a bogey on the 10th but played the rest of the back at 3-under, logging four of her round's seven birdies on the final seven holes.
"Sydney struggled for a little bit but then pulled it together," Colorado assistant coach Mia Landegren said. "We had a talk yesterday about not getting down on yourself and it's never over until your last putt is in the hole. I was really proud of her for turning some frustration into something she could utilize and turn into a positive and she had a great, great round."
O'Shaughnessy ended her day two shots behind Givens in a four-way tie for 21st at even-par 144. O'Shaughnessy matched her classmate in the opening round with a 73 and followed that up with a 1-under 71 over the second 18 holes.
"Ellen is such a composed player on the course," Landegren said. "She's very even-keel. She doesn't have any stress or worry over her and I think it's pretty amazing to watch as a freshman. She's just very solid."
Another Buffalo was among those tied for 21st at even, which was its own stand-alone story. Sophomore Vanessa Ngo, playing her first competitive rounds of golf in nearly a year had a fantastic return to the Colorado lineup. Playing as an individual, Ngo captured her second-best round as a Buff with a 1-under 71 in the first round before ending the day with a 73.
Ngo played in three fall tournaments for the Buffaloes last season, ending with the Stanford Intercollegiate in October. She suffered a shoulder injury last winter that required surgery and forced her to miss the spring. Ngo now finds herself just one stroke out of the top 20 in her first tournament back.
"(Vanessa) hasn't played a tournament round in months, so to be able to come off of that and shoot scores like that, I was so proud of her," Landegren said. "She's put in the work and time, gone through some swing changes and has been so dedicated in practice. She told me she had a lot of fun to get back into competition, so I hope she can build off that and keep going forward."
Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch is tied for 25th at 1-over 145. Eidhagen had Colorado's best first round, carding a 1-under 71. For the second-straight tournament she started strong, opening with a birdie and was 2-under through seven before falling back to 1-under through nine. She was even through 14 before carding back-to-back birdies at the par-3 15th and par-5 16th, wrapping up her third under par round in four tries this fall.
Eidhagen Harrouch had a tougher beginning to the second round, dropping to 4-over through 12 before gaining two strokes back with birdies on a pair of par 5s at the 14th and 16th to end with a 74.
Sophomore Carolyn Fuller is tied for 32nd at 3-over 147, logging scores of 73 in the first and 74 in the second, identical to her first two rounds at last week's Leadership & Golf Invitational. Classmate Francesca Sumcad is tied for 49th at 11-over, 155, highlighted by a 74 in the first round.
Washington State's Alice Johansson is the individual leader after two rounds at 10-under, 134, which included a 65 in the second round. Colorado State's Pemika Arphamongkol and CSU Fullerton's Davina Xanh are tied for second, two shots back at 136.
Colorado will pair with CSU Fullerton and Nevada in Tuesday's final round, set for a shotgun start at 9 a.m., with those groupings set to start between holes five through eight.
