Buffs Open Big 12 Play Dec. 30 vs. Iowa State
BOULDER – The Big 12 Conference announced the 20-game league men's basketball schedule for all 16 teams on Thursday.
Colorado makes its official return to Big 12 play with a historic rival. The Buffaloes will host Iowa State on Monday, Dec. 30, at the CU Events Center in what will be the 149th edition of the rivalry, the third longest in program history. Colorado will make the return trip to Ames, Iowa, for the first time since 2011 on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
The Big 12 schedule is broken down by home-and-home series with five opponents and single games with the other 10: five home and five away. Opponents were selected based on a combination of geography, historical results and a poll of the coaches to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitiveness.
Along with Iowa State, Colorado will play a home-and-home series with Kansas, former Pac-12 Conference rival Arizona State, TCU and UCF. Arizona State and UCF are the first conference road games as the Buffaloes travel to Tempe on Saturday, Jan. 4, and then Orlando on Wednesday, Jan. 8.
Colorado will host 2021 NCAA Final Four participants Baylor and Houston along with BYU, Cincinnati and West Virginia at the CU Events Center. The Buffaloes will have single road contests at Arizona, Utah, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.
One major adjustment for the current Buffaloes will be the absence of travel partners, which has been the norm in the Big 12. Other than the Arizona State-UCF swing, where school is not in session, Colorado will make single-game trips to its other eight road opponents. In total, the Buffaloes have three instances of back-to-back road games and two with consecutive home games.
An additional change will be the days of the week the Buffaloes compete. Colorado's weekday games are split between Monday (twice), Tuesday and Wednesday (four times each). The Buffaloes don't play a single conference game on Thursday, which was the primary weekday slot in the Pac-12.
The majority of Colorado's schedule on weekends will be played on Saturday (seven) with three slated for Sunday.
Half of Colorado's Big 12 schedule will feature two days in between games and another five with a three-day break. Colorado has only one instance of a single day in between contests, which was a staple in the Pac-12, and it's a huge one. The Buffaloes host Baylor on Saturday, Feb. 22, then turn around to welcome long-time rival Kansas for a potential "Big Monday" match up on Feb. 24.
Senior Day for the Buffaloes will be on the final day of the regular season, a Saturday, March 8, game against TCU.
Times and television for all games will be announced at a later date.
EXHIBITION SCHEDULED: Colorado has added an exhibition game to its schedule, hosting Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 3 p.m. at the CU Events Center.
The Sagehens, an NCAA Division III program located in Claremont, Calif., features senior forward Pete Boyle, the youngest son of Colorado head coach Tad Boyle. The two teams have met once before, prior to the 2019-20 season, with the eldest Boyle, Jack, playing for the Sagehens.
