CARY, N.C. – The Colorado Buffaloes tennis team saw Aya El Sayed and Pia Rebec fall in the main draw consolation round of 16 of the ITA All-American Championships Wednesday night at the Cary Tennis Park.

For El Sayed and Rebec, they looked to rebound after losing their first match of the season yesterday, but the conditions did them no favors. After the start time of the match was pushed back two hours as well as indoors due to rain the duo had a tough team across the net in Oklahoma's Julia Garcia-Ruiz and Chloe Noel.

In the first set neither pair was able to create any separation, with the score going no further than a one game lead nearly the entire set. El Sayed and Rebec took the first game and was back-and-forth until they tied it all up at four games apiece. There, Garcia-Ruiz and Noel finally extended their lead, and it was all they needed to win the first set 6-4.

The second set was not as close throughout with the Oklahoma duo jumping out to a 3-0 lead and taking control. El Sayed and Rebec battled to get back in winning two of the next three games, but it was to late with Oklahoma taking the final two games to win the match 6-4, 6-2 to knock out the Buffs.

Despite the loss, the tournament has been a success for the Buffs. This year marked the first time winning the opening match of the tournament since 2016, and both El Sayed and Mila Stanojevic accomplished this feat. For El Sayed and Rebec, they were seeded No. 6 in the main draw, the highest ever at Colorado at this event. This is a step in the right direction for the Colorado tennis program.

"Proud of Mila, Aya and Pia for how they competed and represented the Buffs this past week," head coach Anthony Pham said on the tournament. "It's been a while since Colorado has had this strong of a presence here at the ITA All-American tournament and overall, this was a very positive showing. The entire team is excited to continue preparing for regionals in a couple of weeks."

Up Next
The Buffs will have a few weeks off from competition before traveling to Las Cruces, New Mexico for the ITA Mountain Region Championships. This tournament will be another opportunity to qualify for the NCAA individual championships in November.
