Buffs Start the Season Strong at the Northwestern Tournament

EVANSTON, Ill. – The 2025 season could not have started better for the Colorado Buffaloes tennis team, which won all nine matches on day one of the Northwestern Tournament at the Combe Tennis Center Friday morning.
Colorado opened the season facing off against Northern Illinois. There were three doubles matches, and six singles matches, with no team scores. Throughout the nine matches, the Buffs controlled the day, winning all nine.
Much like a normal match the day began with doubles play, and the Buffs tried some new pairings with Aya El Sayed and Mila Stanojevic playing their first doubles match together outside of fall tournaments and Lera Alexin and Pia Rebec also saw their first doubles match together. While it was a new experience for both duo's they both finished with a 6-2 win.Â
The third and final doubles match of the day saw Ema Bubalo and Anya Nelson, ranked No. 21 in the country, continue their success from the fall. The pair claimed a 6-3 win to wrap up doubles play on day one.
When the day moved to singles, the outcomes were much the same as the Buffs won all six matches. The first five matches in singles were all won in straight sets. Sophomores Bubalo and Rebec each won their match 6-1, 6-4.
Senior's Stanojevic and Betina Tokac each got their final spring started in the win column. Stanojevic defeated NIU's Maria Dzemeshkevich 6-0, 6-3 and Tokac took down Lucia Yecora 6-4, 6-2.
Alexin in her first match of the season earned her first dual win against Jenna Horne 6-4, 6-2.
The lone third-set match came from El Sayed against the Huskies Nataly Ninova. After dropping the first set 7-5, El Sayed dominated the rest of the match winning 6-1, 6-2.
