Colorado holds on for the win on the road

SALT LAKE CITY — Colorado outlasted Utah 2-1 in the Rocky Mountain Rumble on Thursday at Ute Field. The Buffaloes held a two-goal advantage and held off Utah's comeback effort in the final 15 minutes.

The win, combined with Baylor's loss to TCU, pushes Colorado into a tie atop the Big 12 standings (at the time of this release). The Buffs are now 5-1-1 in league play and 11-2-2 overall.

"I thought we could be a little bit sharper," head coach Danny Sanchez noted. "The moments when we were sharp, we really moved the ball forward and played some nice soccer. But there were stretches where I thought we could be a little bit cleaner. I think that's the sign of a good team, when maybe they don't play their best and still get a result against a team that's been playing really well."

Jordan Nytes, the reigning Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week, recorded six saves, all in a busy second half, to preserve the win.

Jace Holley got the Buffs on the board first with an early strike in the 8th minute. Lexi Meyer put in the game-winning goal, marking her first career tally to secure the road win. Emerson Layne assisted on both goals, recording her multi-assist game of her career.

Utah (7-6-3, 2-3-2) outshot the Buffs 22-10 on the night and closed with a slight 7-6 edge in shots on goal. 17 of the Utes' '22 shots came in the final 45 minutes.

"We're up 1-0 at halftime and hadn't really given Utah anything," Head coach Danny Sanchez expressed. "I thought we were playing well. I told the team at halftime, 'They're going to come out on the front foot,' and they really did. I thought we were on our heels a little bit. I thought we were a little impatient when we got the ball. The second goal really is waht won us the game."

How it Happened
The first half began with the Buffaloes setting the pace early. Holley found the back of the net on the game's first shot, taking the feed from Layne and slotting it shortside from the top corner of the six-yard box.

Hope Leyba made a run down the far side of the field, cutting into the box and ringing a shot off the woodwork late in the first half as the one-goal advantage held at the break.

The second half began with a strong offensive push from the Buffs, as Layne and Leyba both attempted shots in the opening minute. Leyba's attempt went wide, while Utah's goalkeeper saved Layne's.

Nytes made her first save of the night, denying Kelly Bullock in the 46th minute.

The Buffs' next shot on goal didn't come until the 68th minute, building up to the game-winning goal. Ava Priest put a shot on target, and the rebound bounced out to Layne. Her pass back to the middle of the field found a wide-open Meyer, who was there to tap the ball across the goal line.

Nytes rose to the occasion again in the 76th minute, making back-to-back saves to keep the CU's 2-0 lead intact. However, Utah responded with a goal by Callie Blaylock in the 77th minute, narrowing the margin to 2-1.

Despite Utah's efforts to equalize, Nytes continued to anchor the defense with multiple saves, helping Colorado preserve their lead until the final whistle. The half concluded with the Buffaloes maintaining a 2-1 victory.
