Buff Golfers Tied For First In Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational

October 09, 2025 | Men's Golf

Knight, Swanson Record Bogey-Free Rounds

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Colorado men's golf team has continued its solid play – and mostly in red numbers –as the Buffaloes are tied for the lead after the first round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, which was completed here Thursday.

The Buffaloes and host, the University of the Pacific, both recorded 12-under par 276 team scores to occupy the top of the standings.  The University of San Diego is third (10-under 278), followed by Utah Tech (8-under 280) and UC- San Diego (7-under 281) to round out the top five.   Seven teams are under par after 18 holes, with one other in at even.

It was CU's sixth straight subpar round as a team, and the ninth in 10 rounds thus far during the '25-26 season.   The Buffs had a record 29 last year (14 of 15 in the fall), besting the old season-high of 25 in 2017-18.

"It was a nice, steady effort today," head coach Roy Edwards said.  "We were impressed by everyone's poise and competitive approach.  We had perfect weather conditions for the round, and the same is expected for the next two days."

For the second consecutive round, all six Buffaloes shot scores of par or better, as did the eight players in the final round of CU's Simpson Invitational last week (12 of the 14 rounds were of the subpar variety, with eight in the 60's).

Junior Brandon Knight is pacing the Buffalo attack here, as he is tied for second a after opening with a 5-under par 67 on the 7,189-yard, par-72 course at The Reserve at Spanos Park.  From Pleasanton, Calif., he is practically playing in his backyard as Stockton is less than 40 miles from where he grew up.   How good was his opening round?  It was his second straight bogey-free round as he had an eagle, three birdies and 14 pars after finishing up the Simpson with no holes over par.  He has equaled his career-best streak of 36 consecutive holes of par or better.  Knight parred the first five holes and then went into red numbers for the remainder of the day after eagling the 540-yard, par-5 6th hole.  Overall, he was 3-under on the par-5's and 2-under on the par-4's, while playing the par-3's even.

Senior Hunter Swanson is tied for sixth, as he too recorded a bogey-free round his first time around the Spanos Park track; he had four birdies and 14 pars en route to a 4-under 68.  He birdied No. 1, a 353-yard, par-4 to open his day, and obviously stayed subpar the remainder of the way.  He was under par on all configurations: 2-under on the par-4's and 1-under on the par-3's and par-5's.  He has a run of 29 straight holes of par or better going (and already owns the school's third-longest streak of 42).

It was Swanson's sixth career bogey-free round, while Knight recorded his fourth, the second for each this season.  The Buffaloes already have six such rounds in the month-old campaign.  The duo's 14 pars are tied for fourth in the field as well.

Sophomore Parker Paxton, CU's Male Athlete of the Week for his 13-under 203, second place effort in CU's Simpson Invitational last week, continued his solid play with a 2-under 70, tying him for 15th.  He opened strong with three straight birdies (on Nos. 1 through 3), before finishing his round with a team-high six birdies (tied for fifth in the field), nine pars, two bogeys and a double.  He recorded par or better scores on his first seven holes, extending a streak to 22 in a row including the last 15 in the Simpson.  He was 3-under on the par-5's and 2-under on the par-4's, while he struggled a bit on the par-3's, playing those 3-over (included his double bogey on No. 8).

Freshman Tyler Long is tied for 23rd after fashioning a 1-under 71.  He was 1-over through 10, but back-to-back birdies thrust him into the happy side of par. He had three birdies and 13 pars opposite two bogeys, while playing the par-5's at 2-under and the par-3's even; h was 1-over on the par-4's.

Junior Ty Holbrook is tied for 28th after he recorded an even-par 72 (an even 36 on both nines).  He had three birdies, 13 pars against one bogey and a double bogey—the latter unfortunately coming his final hole of the day, the 399-yard, par-4 18th.  Otherwise, he would have posted a subpar score as well.  He was 3-under on the par-5's, even on the par-3's and 3-over on the par-4's.  But he did continue his eye-opening dominance on par-5 holes this season: he birdied three of the four Thursday, and now in 40 par-5's holes to date his fall, he has two eagles, 29 birdies, seven pars and just two bogeys, all adding to 31-under.

First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera is competing here as an individual (his scores won't count toward the CU team total), but played well as he's tied for eighth after a 3-under 69; he was one of 14 players in the 96-man field to post a score in the 60's Thursday.  He had four birdies and 13 pars with one bogey, another Buff playing the par-5's at 3-under (he was 1-under on the par-3's and 1-over on the par-4's).  He bogeyed early on (No. 3), and then played the final 15 holes at 4-under, matched or better only by Knight.  There are 11 players competing here individually; he's second amongst that group.

San Diego's Ian Maspat holds the individual lead after the first round, as he carded an 8-under 64; he had eight birdies and 10 pars, sizzling on the back nine with six of his birds.  That leads four players – including CU's Knight – by three strokes.

The second round is scheduled for Friday morning; the Buffaloes will be paired with host Pacific and the University of San Diego, teeing off No. 1 in 9-minute intervals beginning at 10:09 a.m. MDT.  The tournament concludes with the third and final round Saturday morning.

NOTES: As Edwards alluded, the weather was perfect, with temperatures in the upper 60's into the low 70's under sunny skies with negligible wind … In Roy Williams Era at CU (20th season), the Buffaloes now have 247 subpar rounds; in the school's history before his arrival, Colorado had just 84 … Holbrook was just seventh on the team on the par-5's last year (18-under) … The average score for all 96 rounds Thursday was 73.63; there are 27 players under par and 11 who shot even-par scores … Pacific holds the edge over CU on the seven holes that played the toughest Thursday (in order: Nos. 17, 15, 9, 14, 18, 13 and 8); the Tigers were a collective 1-over, while the Buffaloes were 5-over … Six players had bogey-free rounds, but CU the only team two players accomplishing it … The five CU scorers are playing the par-5's the best in the field at 12-under (as is CSU Northridge),  the par-4's at 2-under (third; host Pacific lead at 6-under) and the par-3's at 2-over (tied for fifth,  Cal Baptist tops all at 2-under) … d, Colorado has the sixth-most birdies (19; CSUN also has the most here with 23), and leads with 63 pars (CSU Fullerton is next with 59); but the Buffs recorded just 5 bogeys, the fewest with UC San Diego with the next fewest, double CU's total with 10) … Colorado keeps recording eagles, now with 13 this season (by six different players) – that's already 43 percent of the school record of 30 set last year … Through 10 rounds this young season, CU's scorers are an impressive 124-under par … CU's eight players have combined to play 75 rounds so far – 55 have been par or better (45 subpar, 10 even) with 29 rounds in the 60's … This is the seventh time the Buffaloes are playing a tournament in Stockton, the most recent in 2018 when CU finished seventh in the NCAA West Regional … CU also played in the Northern California Invitational here (in 1986) and in four Robertson Homes Invitationals between 1987 and 1994; in the '87 event, Colorado junior John Lindberg claimed medalist honors with a 9-under 66-66-72—204 performance … With the Buffaloes posting a 15-0-1 mark in single rounds, Thursday, CU is now 122-24-8 (.818).
