CU’s First-Year Program: Setting the Stage for Success in the Classroom and on the Field
September 22, 2025 | Scripps Leadership & Career Development
As the fall semester kicks into full swing, incoming CU Boulder student-athletes in the class of 2027 at CU Boulder begin their journeys, both in the classroom and on the field. This exciting time also presents challenges as student-athletes adjust to college life while balancing their rigorous athletic commitments.
To help these students succeed in all areas of their lives, Scripps Leadership and Career Development has created the First-Year Program (FYP), an initiative designed to address the unique needs of freshman student-athletes and to support their holistic development as WHOLE student-athletes.
Before the academic year began, first-year student-athletes met three times over the summer to lay the groundwork for a successful transition to CU Boulder, focusing on key areas such as time management, communication, and whole wellness. These sessions were designed to build confidence and ensure that student-athletes arrived on campus feeling prepared and ready to thrive in the classroom, on their playing surface, as well as socially, physically, and mentally.
The first fall session, held on September 15, focused on building community, reflecting on the first weeks as a Buff, and honing self-awareness through core values identification. Working in small cohorts, student-athletes used the athletic department's RAPID core values (Respect, Accountability, Passion, Integrity, and Dedication) as a guide to discuss how knowing your why and the importance of goal setting in this new environment will help them be more successful in everything they tackle at CU.
The First Year Program continues throughout the academic year, with our next session scheduled for November 11th, focusing on key areas such as time management, building resilience, and coping now that students have been on campus for three months.
FYP aligns with the Crawford Family WHOLE Student-Athlete Program, which focuses on Wellness, Health, and Optimal Life Experience. The initiative aims to promote balance and well-being across all aspects of a student-athlete's life while fostering independence, self-awareness, and a strong sense of community.
