Getting to know the new players throughout the season
BOULDER – On Wednesday, the Colorado Buffaloes women's basketball team takes on the No. 19 Baylor Bears in a rematch from early on in Big 12 play.
The Buffs have 10 new faces on the team this season, and CUBuffs.com will feature 'Get to Know' spotlights on all 10 players throughout the season.
Next up, graduate transfer Nyamer Diew.
What was it like growing up in Minnesota and playing basketball there?
It was fun. I feel like a lot of people play not just basketball but multiple sports. It's just fun because you could grow up, and we had the Lynx and the Timberwolves there. It was fun to see that you could go far in that.
How was your experience playing for the first South Sudan women's team?
It was good. It was really fun. We got to meet some really cool people. They got their first win, which was this evening for them, but this morning for me. So that was pretty cool to see the evolution, and just having the chance to play with them and being on their radar for the next few years when I'm done with college. It was an honor to represent [them], and it was just cool because my mom got to be there for that. It was really fun.
What made you choose to come to CU?
Definitely, just the state of Colorado being so pretty. There are lots of things to do, being in the mountains and not being in the flatlands. But then also the coaches, they're great. I think I fit in their coaching style, and I fit in the system very well.
What's your favorite thing about living in Colorado?
The balance. Just like seeing the views and the sunshine 300 plus days is really nice.
What's been a favorite memory with the team so far?
I would probably say upsetting K-State or our alumni weekend; just having everyone there supporting us was really cool. So, probably those two games.
What do you want to do after you graduate?
I'm hoping to play overseas for a little bit. Travel. That's definitely what I want to do. That's my main goal. But if that doesn't play out, then probably travel a little bit and get a job. I think traveling will actually open up a lot of doors and just witnessing all that, but definitely playing pro right now, and finishing up my master's too.
What do you like to do outside of basketball?
I'm really chill. I like to just kind of hang. I like to read. I hammock when it's nice out, so that's pretty fun. I love going to coffee shops and figuring things out. I don't have much free time right now, especially since my master's is so crazy. But when I do, I think it's mostly reading and hanging out with myself, being all by myself, just a vibe. I watch a lot of basketball. If I'm not doing anything, it's probably just reading or watching basketball.
What kind of books do you like to read?
Right now, I'm on a Sally Rooney train, so I'm reading a whole bunch of her books. I'm currently reading Beautiful World, Where Are You. I'm almost done with that one. If anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears.
Do you have any sports heroes that you look up to?
Not really. I think it's just cool to see different types of people thrive in different types of ways in the game. That's pretty fun. But I really liked Maya Moore when she was playing. Growing up and just having her in Minnesota was really, really cool. Right now, Napheesa Collier is pretty cool. I love watching her play on both sides of the floor. It's just fun. On the men's side, Jayson Tatum is probably my favorite. I wouldn't say I idolize or anything with these players; it's just really fun to watch them. And Anthony Edwards is really fun to watch. I think it's pretty cool that three of the four people that I named all played or are playing at Minnesota. That's pretty cool.
Diew and the Buffs tip-off against Baylor on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m. MT.

Cory Lopez and Carol Callan will have pregame coverage starting 30 minutes before tip-off on the Colorado Radio Network.
Up Next: Feb. 15, Houston (ESPN+/6 p.m. MT).
