LUBBOCK, Texas  — The Colorado Buffaloes put together a strong showing on the first day of the Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships at Texas Tech's Sports Performance Center.

Freshman Abbey Nechanicky led CU's distance crew with a sixth-place finish in the women's 5,000-meter run, clocking 16:25.12 and securing three team points. The women's distance medley relay (DMR) team of Katja Baeuerle, Aubrey Leneweaver, Helen Carlson and Jessie Secor placed third, finishing in 11:13.81. On the men's side, Lukas Haug, Danny Tragarz, Drew Costelow and Chris Cherry crossed the line in 9:38.14 to take third place in the men's DMR.

The heptathlon kicked off the 2025 Big 12 Indoor Championships, with John Swabik leading the Buffs in the 60 meters, placing ninth in 7.09 seconds, just a tenth of a second off his personal best. Swabik and Nick Bianco currently sit in ninth and 10th place, respectively, heading into the final two events on Saturday.

In the pentathlon, Allie Routledge finished just six points shy of scoring for the Buffs, taking ninth place with 3,900 points. Routledge ran a personal best 2:15.02 in the 800 meters, earning first place in that event. Eva Bruce (3,612 points) and Riley Burkey (3,594 points) finished 13th and 14th, respectively.

In the field events, Amanda Opp threw 17.35 meters in the women's weight throw, finishing 14th, while Lucas Williams placed sixth in the men's weight throw with a mark of 17.74 meters.

On the track, Emma Pollak finished fourth in her heat of the women's 400 meters, clocking 55.88 seconds. Myla Wilkes ran a personal-best 23.87 in the women's 200 meters, but did not advance to the final. Elliot Pribramsky finished fifth in her section of the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:54.70 in her first-ever race at that distance. In the men's 400 meters, Danny Tragarz clocked 47.82 seconds, narrowly missing his personal best.

In the men's mile prelims, Ethan Edgeworth finished 11th with a time of 4:08.75. In the men's 5,000 meters, Dean Casey, James Overberg and Grady Rauba placed sixth, 10th and 12th, respectively.

Competition continues Saturday as the Buffaloes look to improve their standings. Coverage of the Big 12 Indoor Championships will be streamed live on ESPN+.
