A double-double from Jade Masogayo helped CU to a fourth straight win
BOULDER – Junior transfer Jade Masogayo poured in 19 points and snagged a career-high 14 rebounds as she helped Colorado over familiar foe Arizona, 56-47, Wednesday night at the CU Events Center.
Wednesday's win extends the Buffs' streak to four in a row as the team improves to 16-6 overall and 7-4 in league play.
"Proud of our team tonight; we're a resilient bunch," head coach JR Payne expressed after the win. "We're facing adversity with injuries and different things as well as pressure and some turnovers. I was very proud of how we responded. As far as just making some really big plays, big defensive rebounds, and big plays at the end of the shot clock. A lot of different people contributed in a big way tonight."
Masogayo helped the Buffs early on, clinching her double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, and added three blocks by halftime. The Forth Worth, Texas, native finished 6-for-13 from the field and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. Lior Garzon was the only other Buff in double figures, closing with 12 points.
"I didn't really realize how many points and rebounds I had," Masogayo noted. "I was just playing my game. I wasn't really thinking about shying off or anything like that. I'm just trying to stay as aggressive as I can."
Colorado held the lead for over 30 minutes, overtaking Arizona by the end of the first quarter, and built an eight-point lead at halftime. CU's advantage grew to 15 points late in the third quarter, but the Wildcats slimmed the deficit down to four midway through the fourth quarter. The Buffs got timely baskets down the stretch from Garzon and Wetta to keep CU in front and secure the win.
Arizona (14-10, 5-6 Big 12) was led by Isis Beh and Skylar Jones, who both had 12 points in the loss.
Payne and Co. were without the services of leading scorer Frida Formann for the second consecutive game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Arizona climbed out to a five-point lead at the start of the night, but the Buffs erased the deficit thanks mainly to Nyamer Diew, who provided eight of the Buffs' 14 points in the first quarter. CU started the game 0-for-8 shooting before Diew scored all eight of her points in an 8-2 run to give Colorado the 10-9 lead with 1:33 to play in the opening quarter. Two buckets from Masogayo closed the frame with the Buffs in front 14-13.
"Nyamer is someone that we love to bring off the bench because she does bring that spark," Payne said. "She had seven rebounds tonight. It wasn't just a couple of shots. It was very good defense, very good rebounding, and hitting big shots. We love to have that productivity off the bench."
Garzon hit her only 3 of the night early in the second quarter. She scored six of CU's first eight points in the quarter, helping the Buffs build a 22-17 lead. The Colorado defense dug in before the half, only allowing eight points on 4-of-16 shooting from the Wildcats. Masogayo scored six points, including a buzzer-beating layup, in a 7-0 run to end the half with the Buffs up 29-21.
Colorado came out of the half quickly, getting a steal and score from Johanna Teder on Arizona's opening possession. The Buffs doubled up the Wildcats 10-5 in the first five minutes of the quarter, and Garzon got the hoop out of the media timeout to put CU in front 41-26 with 4:13 to go in the period. Four of Colorado's seven turnovers in the quarter came in the final two minutes, helping Arizona close on an 8-2 run to slim the CU lead down to nine, 43-34, at the end of the quarter.
"Kindyll [Wetta] is a fourth-year point guard and does a really great job handling pressure when we need her to," Payne noted. "We were definitely prepared coming in, but then when we saw it [press], we didn't do the things that we had practiced as far as just basic movement patterns and areas that we were going to attack and where we would reverse the ball and things like that. It's really important that we understand the game plan and then execute it. Especially against a team that really pressures and can be really disruptive. It's an area that, as a group, we have to really look at and make sure if we have questions, we ask them. So that we can be really organized. Organization is everything against a team that is trying to create chaos."
CU's lead hit 11 points in the opening minute of the fourth quarter, but a 7-0 run from the Wildcats tightened up the scoreboard, 45-41. A Garzon hit both of CU's field goals in a 2-for-8 start the quarter, and the team's scoring was aided at the free-throw line. Masaogayo hit a pair of freebies with 4:33 to play, extending the CU lead to 50-41.
The Wildcats scored the following five points to get back within five, 50-45, with 2:57 to go. An offensive rebound from Masogayo gave the Buffs an extra possession, and Kindyll Wetta made good on it to go back up by seven. The senior point guard answered the call again with just over one minute to play with a short jumper to give the Buffs a 54-45 lead.
"It was huge," Payne said of Wetta's scoring late in the game. "We were trying to get top-down attacks. She's one player that can really get downhill. She's smart enough to know when to shoot and when to pass. That makes her a real double-threat heading downhill."
Tabitha Betson iced the game with a pair of free throws, closing out the game with eight seconds to play.
