Buffs Fall to No. 13 Texas Tech

March 29, 2025 | Tennis

BOULDER – Colorado closed its homestand against No. 13 Texas Tech, falling 4-0 Saturday night at the Meadows Club.

Colorado (7-10, 1-8 Big 12) was without Aya El Sayed and Rixt van der Werff from the start and without Pia Rebec in singles against the No. 13-ranked Texas Tech (15-2, 8-1)

"Hats off to Texas Tech; they deserved the victory tonight," head coach Anthony Pham said. "We continue to have some unfortunate things happen. Adversity hit us, but it's just part of it. Hopefully, we can get healthy and be ready for two good teams next week. The fight is there from our group and try to regroup and be ready the next time we are on the courts."

HOW IT HAPPENED
Avelina Sayfetdinova and Mariia Hlahola claimed the first win for Texas Tech at No. 1 doubles in straight sets 6-0 over Anya Nelson and Ema Bubalo.

Texas Tech won the doubles point after Yekaterina Dmitrichenko and Hailey Murphy won at No. 2 over Lera Alexin and Mila Stanojevic. The match started close, 2-1 in favor of Texas Tech, but got away from the Buffs, ending 6-3.

Pia Rebec and Betina Tokic's match ended unfinished at No. 3 doubles against Jermine Sherif and Andreea Lila with a score of 4-3 Texas Tech. Rebec and Tokic started down 3-0 but fought back to down 4-3 when the doubles point was clinched.

Mila Stanojevic was the first player to finish at No. 1 singles against Sayfetdinova. In the first set, Stanojevic started down 2-0 but came back to tie it at 2-2. Sayfetdinova retook the lead, winning two games, and didn't turn back, winning the first set 6-4 and the second set 6-0 to lead the match 2-0.

Ema Bubalo lost at No. 3 singles against Hlahola, putting the Red Raiders up 3-0. After Bubalo won the first game, she began to slow down slightly and ultimately lost the first set 6-3. In the second set, Bubalo came out and won the first two games, but Hlahola quickly closed the gap and made it 2-2. Bubalo and Hlahola went back and forth from there to get to 5-5, before Hlahola closed the match at 7-5.

At No. 2 singles, Tokac got out to a fast start against Dmitrichenko, jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the first set. Dmitrichenko responded by winning the next four games to take a 5-4 lead. Tokac was able to force a first-set tiebreaker and was tied 4-4 before Dmitrichenko took the final three points to win the first set 7-6 (4). The second set was never more than a game lead in either direction until the match was tied at 4-4, and Dmitrichenko took the final two games to clinch the match for the Red Raiders.

Alexin's match against Andreea was left unfinished before the second set began after the first set ended 7-6 (2) in favor of Texas Tech.

The only Buff to lead a set today was Nelson at No. 5 singles. She led 4-3 over Murphy when the match was clinched.

Gretsch played in the first conference match of her career against Sherif at No. 6 singles. She trailed 5-1 when the match was clinched.

Colorado will go on the road for the last time during the regular season to face Cincinnati on April 4 and West Virginia on April 6.
