Buffs Complete Day One of the Bryan Clay Multis

AZUSA, Calif. — Colorado's combined events squad opened competition Thursday at the Bryan Clay Multis hosted by Azusa Pacific University, with several Buffs recording personal and season-best marks.


On the women's side, Eva Bruce, Riley Burkey, and Ava Goetz took to the track in the heptathlon. Bruce had a strong showing and sits in second place in Group A with 3,217 points, highlighted by a personal best of 24.35 in the 200 meters—the fastest time in the group. Burkey totaled 2,776 points in Group C, including a personal best 24.79 in the 200. Goetz finished the day with 2,953 points, leading her group in the high jump at 1.73 meters and posting a season-best 27.22 in the 200.


For the men, four Buffs competed across different groups in the decathlon. Nick Bianco moved into fifth place in Group A after closing out the day with a strong 49.67 in the 400 meters, bringing his day-one total to 3,876 points. John Swabik sits in second place in Group B with 3,981 points, highlighted by a personal best of 12.72 meters in the shot put and a 50.19 in the 400. John Bass recorded a personal best in the 400 (51.28) and totaled 3,618 points, putting him sixth in Group C. Marco Martinez, competing in his first decathlon of the season, posted a season-best in three events and finished the day with 3,049 points.


The decathletes will return Friday for the final four events, 110-meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, and 1,500 meters, while the heptathletes will wrap up competition with the long jump and javelin.
