Buffs End Big 12 Championship On A High Note
April 17, 2025 | Women's Golf
HOCKLEY, Texas - Colorado wrapped up play at the 2025 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship on a positive note, playing its best of three rounds while finishing in 14th place at the 54-hole event at the Houston Oaks Country Club Thursday.
Â
The Buffaloes shot 13-over-par, 297, in the third round a full 12 strokes better than their second round score and seven better than Tuesday's first round. Colorado tied for the fifth best team score of the day with double-digit over par numbers were the norm in the field on the championship's final day.
Â
No. 19 Arizona claimed the team title over No. 8 Arizona State and No. 30 Oklahoma State by one stroke after a playoff where five threesomes, representing all three teams, each played one hole. The three teams were tied at 19-over, 871, after 54 holes.
Â
Colorado nearly climbed out of the bottom spot in the overall standings. The Buffaloes were 58-over for the championship, just two strokes behind Cincinnati which finished 13th at 56-over.
Â
Colorado benefited from keeping its double bogey numbers to a minimum. After 17 holes of double bogey or higher in the first two rounds, the Buffaloes had just two such holes in the final round.
Â
"We had a better day today, obviously," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "Shooting the fifth best round of the day demonstrated more of who we actually are as a team. I am sad for this group, because they don't deserve to have the season end this early."
Â
Senior Maria Eidhagen Harrouch was Colorado's top golfer for the tournament tying for 25th place at 10-over, 223. She had the Buffaloes' low round of the day, and tournament, at 1-over, 72.
Â
Eidhagen Harrouch started off well early, shooting 1-under through the first six holes thanks to a birdie at the 390-yard par-4 12th. She fell back to 2-over at the turn and stayed there through 15 holes before getting back to 1-over with her fourth birdie of the day at the 191-yard par-3 7th. She then made par on her final two holes to close out the round.
Â
"I'm happy for Maria, the way she ended this event by earning a top 25," Sheils said. "She has developed her game immensely over her two short years here through her passion and drive to succeed."
Â
Junior Morgan Miller tied for 37th overall, two shots back of her teammate at 12-over, 225. Miller shot 74 on Thursday, her best of three rounds at the Big 12 Championship, highlighted by birdies on a pair of par 4s at the 14th and first.
Â
Freshman Sydney Givens tied for 47th overall at 16-over, 229, shooting her second-straight round of 77. Redshirt freshman Vanessa Ngo tied for 61st overall at 22-over, 235, following a 76 in the final round. Sophomore Francesca Sumcad rallied from a pair of 80-plus finishes during the week to secure Colorado's third-best round of the day with a 75 as she finished in 66th place overall at 28-over.
Â
"The end to this season stings because we know how close we were to advancing to regionals," Sheils said. Â "However, the group knows we are closer to reaching our goals than when we started. We will focus on that and how we can improve moving forward."
Â
Sophie Bert of Kansas State took medalist honors at 2-under, 211. She was the only player in the field to finish under par for the championship after carding a 66 in the final round. Arizona's Nena Wongthanavimok, Kansas State's Carla Bernat and Arizona State's Beth Coulter tied for second at even-par, 213.
