Golfers In 11th In Tennessee

Weather Issues Alter Event; Second Round Play Suspended Due To Darkness

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – The 27th-ranked University of Colorado men's golf team had some struggles for the first time this season, as the Buffaloes are were in 11th place when second round play was suspended here Friday in Vanderbilt's 22nd Annual Mason Rudolph Championship.

The 14 participating teams completed anywhere from eight to 13 holes in round two, after the first round had been delayed three hours to an 11 a.m. local start due to heavy rains in the Nashville area the last few days.  Once play got underway, host and No. 18 Vanderbilt led after the first round with a 12-under par 268 score, which was good for a four-stroke lead over No. 3 Mississippi; nut when play was called at 7:30 p.m., Ole Miss stood at 22-under par, one better than the Commodores.

No. 2 Auburn is in third at 14-under, with No. 31 Mississippi State fourth (13-under) and No. 42 Charlotte fifth (3-under).  Colorado spent two-thirds of the first round hovering around sixth place and around even par, before finishing with a 4-over 288 total. The Buffs were 6-over in the second round when play was suspended, with players having anywhere from seven-to-nine holes to finish.

"lt was a tough day, for sure, one we really haven't had all year," head coach Roy Edwards said.  "No one could really get anything going.  We thought we had a good plan with the absence of not having a practice round, but it just didn't work out.  But we still have a great opportunity tomorrow to come out, compete and move up the leaderboard."

Due to heavy rains all through Wednesday night into Thursday, it saturated several holes that forced cancellation of Thursday's practice rounds; Edwards said teams were able to briefly walk the courses to get a bit of a feel for them.

And because those rains flooded several holes, competition was split between Vanderbilt's Legends Club's North and South courses.  The first nine holes were played on the South Course as scheduled; the back nine on the North Course were then utilized.  Combined, it played at 7,114-yards and to par-71.

Senior Dylan McDermott is pacing the Buffaloes, as he is 1-under par after 27 holes.  He opened with an even-par 71, a steady round of two birdies and 14 pars with just two bogeys, and recorded two birdie and six pars with one bogey in the afternoon session.

Junior Hunter Swanson is tied for 32nd, as he is 2-over par through 29 holes; he opened with a 1-over 72 and was 1-over through 11 in the second round.  He is 1-under on the par-3's, tied for the best in the 81-man field.

Sophomore Ty Holbrook is tied for 58th, standing 5-over par with eight holes remaining in his second round.  He has a team-high five birdies at present, but is the only Buff with two double bogeys.  He is playing the par-5's at 4-under, tied for the best thus far in the event.

Senior Justin Biwer is also tied for 58, he too 5-over par midway through round two.  He opened with a 3-over par 74, which is actually his high score for the year.  His previous high was a 73, which was tied with McDermott for the "lowest" high score in the Big 12 Conference through play as of Wednesday; the 74 still stands alone as the second lowest high score.

Senior Jack Holland is tied for 65th; he opened with a 2-over 73 but was 4-over also halfway through his second time around the Legends Track.  He played the par-3's at 3-over and the par-5's at 2-over but the par-4's at 3-under in the first round, as he is still 2-under on the par-4's, tied for 10th-best in the field.

Sophomore Brandon Knight is competing here as an individual (his scores do not count toward the CU team total); he is presently tied for 44th after opening with an even-par 71 but was 3-over with six holes yet to play in round two.

Two of Vanderbilt's players are atop the leaderboard, Wells Williams stood at 9-under par through nine holes in the second round, with Ryan Downes right behind him at 8-under; he shot a tournament record 10-under 61 in the first round to break the old mark by two strokes, held by three different players.

The second round will resume at 7 a.m. MDT, with the Buffaloes still paired with Auburn, Ole Miss and host Vanderbilt.   The third round, originally scheduled for Sunday, has been moved up to Saturday as the weather forecast has caused the move.  The teams will then continue into the final 18 holes.

NOTES: It was 72 degrees when play started at 10 a.m. mountain time, with partly cloudy skies and winds ranging from 8-12 miles per hour; it warmed to 84 degrees with the humidity at 81 percent, with the breezes remaining constant …  Colorado is just the third team not located in the eastern or central time zones to participate in the Mason Rudolph; Arizona State finished second in 2018 and Santa Clara 11th in 2022 … The average score for all 81 players in the first round was 72.11; in that round, 13 of the 18 holes played over-par on the average, holes 9, 7, 12 and 15 the toughest; yet the Buffaloes were even on the par-3 12th and just 1-over on the other three, a CU trademark this season that they seem to play the hardest holes the best; by contrast on those holes, Ole Miss was 2-over and Vanderbilt 7-over … The 288 was just CU's third round over par out of 25 this season (the three combined add to just 12 strokes total).
