Buffs Successful Around The Globe

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's golf program has had a busy and memorable summer, spanning all corners of the globe.

The Buffaloes will have seven players on their roster for the 2025-26 season, with three returners and four newcomers, including the program's first golfers from India and Thailand.

Junior transfer Maya McVey won the Open Division of the Arizona Women's Match Play, June 26-29, at the Gainey Ranch Golf Club in Scottsdale. She won three matches in a round robin format to advance to the championship bracket. She then defeated the defending champion, Kate Connolly, in the semifinals 5 & 3 and Brooke McGlasson 3 & 2 in the finals.

"The Arizona Golf Association always puts up great events, and the course was just fantastic, despite the 110-degree heat," McVey said. "This win was a fun one for sure, given it was all match play format, which I haven't done in a couple of years. My approach shots into greens were the highlight of the week and what I believe helped me secure the win."

McVey, who tied for 10th at the Missouri Women's Amateur a week before the Arizona Women's Match Play, is scheduled to compete in Colorado's US Women's Amateur Qualifier on July 9 in Lafayette as well as the Kansas Amateur (July 14-15) and Arizona Amateur (July 24-26).

Junior-to-be Carolyn Fuller, Colorado's most experienced returner, has enjoyed a fine summer both here and abroad. She tied for 16th at the prestigious Southwestern Amateur at 1-over-par, 289, at the Desert Mountain course in Scottsdale, Ariz. After opening with 5-over 77 in the first round, she responded with a 70 in the second round to make the cut, then polished off the event with back-to-back scores of 71 on the weekend.  Of the 38 players that made the cut, she was one of just seven to record three subpar rounds in the event.

"I'm pleased that my golf is trending in the right direction," Fuller said. "In the Colorado Open and Southwestern Amateur, I didn't start off with amazing rounds, but I bounced back and it was really good to see for my mental game and confidence to be trending where I'm improving from the first round to the next. I've been working on the simple stuff and my mental game, getting ready for the fall. I'm very excited for this next year. This summer has been a great warm-up for this upcoming season."

Fuller then journeyed over to Ireland, joining teammate and Dublin native Ellen O'Shaughnessy at the Irish Women's Amateur Open. Fuller recorded a second-straight top 20 finish, tying for seventh overall at 6-over, 222. O'Shaughnessy tied for 28th overall at 20-over, 236.

"It was amazing," said Fuller on playing over in Ireland. "It was fun to play outside the country and my first tournament in Europe. It was a really cool experience for me to get exposure to players outside of college events and the links courses."

Fuller will continue her summer with the USGA Women's Amateur Qualifier in Phoenix on July 10, as well as the Colorado Golf Association Women's Stroke Play Championship, July 14-16 in Colorado Springs, and the Annika WAPT Colorado Championship in Denver, July 29 through Aug. 1.

O'Shaughnessy took third place at the Ulster Amateur Stroke Play Open Championship in Belfast, May 25-27, at 1-over, 217. She was fifth at the Connacht Over 18 Women's Senior Amateur Open in Bearna, Galway, Ireland, on May 25, at 9-over.

Incoming freshman Brenna Higgins qualified for the 2025 USGA Junior Girls Championship by placing second in the US Girls Qualifier at the Indian Tree Golf Course in Arvada on June 13. Higgins shot 1-over-par 72 to take the second of two qualifying spots for the national event to be held July 14-19 in Atlanta.

"During the round, it was just a lot of fun," Higgins said. "I had my sister (Elle) on the bag (as the caddie) and we both were in such good moods, laughing and having fun. With her there, I wasn't pressured to perform, and we just took it shot by shot. I'm so excited for the Girls' Junior Championship because I'll be playing with all the best in the world. I have heard from a lot of people that this tournament is the best setup, and we are treated like tour players. I am excited and can't wait for the experience alongside my sister."

Higgins had another quality showing at the AJGA Wyndham Clark tournament, tying for eighth place at 7-over, 223. She is scheduled to join McVey at the US Women's Amateur Qualifier in Lafayette on July 9.

Incoming freshman Ananthi Vivek wrapped up her 2024-25 season by winning the 2025 Nepal Amateur Open in June with a 54-hole score of even-par, 216. Vivek, a native of Chennai, India, trained this last season at the Tarun Sardesai Golf Academy.

"I've played over 15 tournaments during my gap year, and the Nepal Amateur Open was my final event," Vivek said. "I feel like this tournament was a good reflection of the work I've put into my game throughout the year, and I'm glad to have ended the season on a high note. This tournament is especially close to me because it's the one international event each year where my entire team from the golf academy I train at (TSG) comes out to watch and support. It was a great feeling to have them all with me on the final day."

Teemapat Pateetin, an incoming freshman from Bangkaew, Thailand, is 628th in the latest World Golf Amateur Ranking. She has five top 20 finishes this season, including three in the top 10. In March, Pateetin placed 11th at the SAT Prachin Buri Ladies Championship at 4-over, 220. Pateetin won a Thai Junior Golf Guardian Association Open Championship last fall and added a second-place finish at a similar championship in December at 2-under, 214.

Redshirt sophomore Vanessa Ngo has been playing primarily in California this summer, highlighted by a tie for eighth at the L.A. City Women's Championship, June 20-22, with a 54-hole score of 3-over, 222 at the Wilson and Harding Golf Courses. Just before that, Ngo tied for 10th at the Long Beach Ladies Championship, June 17-18. She is scheduled to play in the Pasadena Women's Championship, July 12-14, and the California Women's Amateur, July 21-26.
