Vivek Nets Top 15 Finish At Red Rocks Invitational

SEDONA, Ariz. — Colorado freshman Ananthi Vivek shot a 2-under-par 70 to claim a top-15 finish at the Red Rocks Invitational, Sunday at the Oakcreek Country Club.
Vivek was 5-over for the 54-hole event hosted by Northern Arizona, tying with three others for 15th place, just four strokes out of the top 10. Recording her first under-par round as a Colorado Buffalo, Vivek soared up 10 spots on the final day of the tournament.
After carding a 77 in Friday's first round, Vivek was three strokes better on Saturday, making par on 16 of 18 holes and shooting a 74, which at the time was her best of 10 collegiate rounds.
"I was pretty consistent," Vivek said. "I played very 'regulation golf' and tried to keep myself in play as much as possible. I got better at eliminating errors with each day as I learned how to navigate the course."
She was even better on Sunday. While the birdies eluded her during Saturday's round, she picked up one quickly on her third hole Sunday on the par-5 18th. Vivek dropped back to even at the turn, but jumped right back into the red with her second birdie at the par-4 second.
"One of my goals for the season is to make more birdies a round," Vivek said. "So my intent with each round was to fight to give myself as many chances as possible. I wasn't worried about the putts falling in, I just wanted to have those chances in this event. Although I didn't make a ton of birdies, in this process of 'giving myself more chances' I ended up making less bogeys which also helped my score."
She was nearly flawless from that point on. After a run of eight straight pars, Vivek captured her third birdie of the round at the par-4 11th. She then coasted to the finish with pars on her final four holes, solidifying her best collegiate finish.
"Ananthi has a very high golf IQ and is able to learn and adapt quickly during her round," Colorado assistant coach Mia Landegren said. "The first two days she didn't make many putts and knew she had to adjust a few of her reads. She did that nicely today and really capitalized on the opportunities she had, making three birdies. She also did a great job at demonstrating smart golf, getting back into play when she needed to, and eliminating big mistakes with only one bogey today. I'm really proud of her and I'm excited to see her progress as she is trending nicely in the right direction."
Classmate Brenna Higgins joined Vivek at the Red Rocks Invitational, tying with three others for 39th place at 16-over. Higgins had her best round in Friday's opener, where she had three birdies on the front nine before finishing with a 74.
"I'm really glad we had this opportunity to have Brenna and Ananthi compete in the Red Rock Invitational," Landegren said. "It was a great learning experience for all three of us. Ananthi played really solid golf today and it was her first time shooting under par in a tournament at CU. She learned a lot this week and I know that being able to shoot under par only will help with her confidence moving forward."
Host Northern Arizona won the team event at 10-under, seven strokes better than runner-up Gonzaga. Grace Lee of Gonzaga and Amy Hodgkins of Northern Arizona tied for medalist honors at 6-under.
Colorado will return to action with the Chevron Silverado Showdown, Apr. 6-8, in Napa, Calif.
