Buffs Closeout Homestand with ISU and Houston

Colorado takes on the Cyclones and Cougars at Prentup Field

BOULDER — Colorado soccer closes out its three-game homestand with two matches at Prentup Field this week. The Buffaloes will host Iowa State on Thursday (7 p.m. MT) and Houston on Sunday (1 p.m. MT).

Colorado (6-1-2, 0-0-1) opened Big 12 play with a scoreless draw against Kansas State, splitting the points in its lone match last week. The Buffs had their chances against the Wildcats, outshooting KSU 14-7. The highlight of the match was CU's shutdown defense, recording its second straight shutout.

"I thought the first half was a little slow," head coach Danny Sanchez recalled. "It wasn't up to our standards. We really limited their opportunities. Their [KSU] best opportunity in the game came from us giving the ball away in the back. Other than that, Jordi [Nytes] managed the game. I thought the beginning of the second half, we played better."

The shutout for the Buffs marks 196:34 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal. The last goal against Nytes and the Buffs came in the 74th minute at Wisconsin. For Nytes, it was her 22nd career shutout at CU and the 28th of her career. The reigning Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Year currently ranks 3rd among active DI goalkeepers with a .406 shutout %.

Iowa State (4-1-2, 1-0-0 Big 12) opened the conference season with a 1-0 win over Arizona last week. The Cyclones lead the Big 12 and are ranked 21st in the nation with a .544 shooting %. ISU has managed 43 shots on goal this season, totaling 13 goals. Ella Zimmerman leads ISU with six points (3 G) this season, with 11 different Cyclones contributing on the scoresheet.

"They are 1-0 in conference, so they're in first place," Sanchez added. "They had a really good match against Arizona, won 1-0, and didn't really give Arizona much. Their expected goals were a lot more than Arizona's, even though Arizona had the ball a little more. They really limited their opportunities and didn't give them much."

The Buffs are solidly in the middle of the Big 12 standings after the first week of conference play, with the opening week results all being closely contested.

"Like I told the team at training, when you look at the Big 12, every game [last week] was a one-goal game," Sanchez noted. "It was either 1-0, 2-1, or scoreless and a draw. This is what we have to come to expect. We played Iowa State last year at their place, and it wasn't dissimilar to our match against K-State. We won 1-0, but it was a bit of a fistfight. We have to rise to that occasion."

Houston (6-0-2, 1-0-0 Big 12) opened its conference slate with a 3-1 win over Cincinnati. The Cougars have found the net 26 times this season and rank 5th in the NCAA with 3.25 goals per game. Houston has outscored its opponents 12-1 over its last four games—one of which was a scoreless draw against Stephen F. Austin.

"They [Houston] are the ones that got the big win," Sanchez added. "They're undefeated and have Texas Tech on Thursday. They have a new coach and have really turned it on."

Brad Thompson will have the call for both games on ESPN+.

The first 250 students will receive Gold Rush t-shirts on Thursday, ahead of CU football's Gold Rush game against BYU on Saturday night.

Sunday's match is Buffs Wear White, with fans encouraged to wear white and match the Buffs' kits on the field.
