Colorado National To Again Host CU's Premier Home Event
ERIE — The 15th Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational, honoring the late long-time coach of the program, will be played this Monday and Tuesday here at Colorado National Golf Club, the Buffaloes' home course located about 12 miles east of campus.
In addition, five miles to the south at The Broadlands Golf Course in Broomfield, the Buffs are hosting the second Les Fowler Individual Invitational; the inaugural one was held in 2019 at Boulder Country Club.
There are 19 teams entered in the field, including host Colorado, many of whom have played in this field previously, with Northern Colorado and Wyoming playing in the event for the 15th time. Other teams appearing are Arkansas State, Boise State, Creighton, CSU Fullerton, Denver, Eastern Washington, Gonzaga, Long Beach State, Loyola-Marymount, Sacramento State, Southern Illinois, Tarleton State, Texas State, UC Irvine, Utah State and UTEP. Last year's champion, Colorado State – who defeated CU by four strokes – is not participating but is sending players to compete in the Fowler. One of last year's tri-medalists, UTEP's Dylan Teeter, returns with Miners in an attempt to become just the second two-time winner; Utah's Kyler Dunkle won outright in 2017 and was co-medalist a year later with CU's Trevor Olkowski.
Colorado Mines, Oklahoma and Texas Tech are also sending individuals to play in the Fowler, with 38 players overall set to compete.
"We are excited to host the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational once again, it is always wonderful to host everyone at home," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The weather looks like it will be really good and Colorado National is in great shape. As far as our team goes, we have been working really hard and the team feels confident we are ready to go. Everyone on the team has played some really good rounds this year. Practice has been quite competitive and we expect to have a great event as a group and individually.
"Additionally, we are hosting the Les Fowler Individual tournament over at The Broadlands," he added. "This is affording us an opportunity to invite teams playing in the Simpson to bring as many players as they like along with other teams to send some individuals. We originally were scheduled to have some of our guys play in the Fowler, but a late team withdrawal left us with some open spots in the Simpson."
Colorado was ranked 26th in the Golf Coaches Association of America's preseason poll, and has opened the season with a pair of third-place ties in Washington State's Palouse Collegiate and New Mexico's William H. Tucker Invitational.
All eight players on the CU roster will participate in "The Simpson," led by the team's lone senior, Hunter Swanson. Juniors Ty Holbrook and Brandon Knight, sophomores Parker Paxton and Zeqian "Michael" Fang and freshmen Casey Kosney and Tyler Long. Rounding out the team is USC graduate transfer Jackson Rivera, who has two years of eligibility remaining.
Four Buffs have subpar averages through two events: Paxton (69.3), Swanson (69.7), Holbrook (70.3) and Knight (70.3), with Long owning a 72.0 mark, shade over par as the WSU meet was held on a par-71 course. Off to a solid collegiate start, Long will be honored this Friday in Denver as a "Future Famer" at the annual Colorado Golf Hall of Fame awards banquet.
Play begins in both events Monday morning with 36 holes of continuous play (foursomes) with a shotgun format start at 8 a.m. (MDT) for the Fowler and 8:15 a.m. for the Simpson. The final 18 holes in each will commence Tuesday in a staggered shotgun format for the Simpson and another shotgun for the Fowler. Colorado National's championship layout is a 7,787-yard, par-72 configuration, while the Broadlands checks in at 7,289 yards, also a par-72 layout.
The tournament namesakes are the two previous head coach before Edwards. The late Mark Simpson served as Colorado's head coach for 29 years (1977-2005), until he passed away at the age of 55 on Dec. 5, 2005; he was inducted earlier that year into the GCAA Hall of Fame. Simpson played under the late Les Fowler, who was at the reins of the program, also for 29 years (1948-77). Edwards both events in their honor.
Both events are free and open to the public.
