Barrington Hargress
Hargress A Model Of Efficiency For Colorado
January 16, 2026 | Men's Basketball
A closer look at the numbers for Colorado junior guard Barrington Hargress.
Hargress is averaging 13.6 points, 4.6 assists and one steal per game. He leads the Buffaloes in assists and is second on the team in scoring, steals and tied for the team lead in field goal percentage at 56.0 percent.
The Inglewood, Calif., native has been great at protecting the ball. His 3.0 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks eighth in the Big 12 Conference and has consistently been among the nation's top 50 players throughout the season.
Most of those numbers fall relatively in line with his first two years at UC Riverside. In 68 games with the Highlanders, he averaged 16.4 points and 4.3 assists with a 2.5 assist-to-turnover ratio.
His scoring average is down slightly, but no one, even Hargress himself, expected to carry the heavy load of scoring at Colorado. At UC Riverside in 2024-25, Hargress led the Big West and was ninth in the nation in scoring at 20.2 points per game as he was called on to be the primary scorer every night.
At Colorado, it was hoped that he would be that all-around point guard who could score when needed, but also to get his teammates involved.
Hargress has become exactly that. He has led a Colorado offensive attack that has ranked among the nation's leaders in scoring, turnovers allowed and assist-to-turnover ratio.
Hargress has scored in double-figures in 13 of 17 games, but has led the Buffaloes in scoring just twice.
He has led the Buffaloes in assists 10 times. He has seven games with at least five assists and also eight games with no more than one turnover.
So while his scoring and assist numbers have translated seamlessly from the Big West to the Big 12, there is one figure that stands out as a stark improvement: his shooting efficiency.
Hargress was a 43 percent shooter over two seasons at UC Riverside, including 32.3 percent from 3-point range.
A strong offseason of working on his shot has paid dividends in a major way at Colorado. Hargress is shooting 56 percent from the field and 52.5 percent from 3-point range as a Buffalo. His overall percentage leads the Big 12 and ranks 10th in the nation from the guard position.
Hargress is attempting five fewer shots per game this season compared to his first two seasons at UC Riverside. At the same time, he is making nearly the same amount of field goals, 5.5 per game this year, compared to 6.1 at UCR.
Hargress has become a nice fit at Colorado. Head coach Tad Boyle and his staff have received exactly what they had hoped, and even a little more, from the Buffaloes' all-around floor general.
"It's his work ethic," said Boyle earlier in the season. "Number one is shot selection. Number two, he hasn't taken bad shots. I think if you wanted to put his performance really all year, in one word, it would be efficient. He's obviously been a great assist to turnover ratio guy for us all year long. He's been a rock solid defender, so he does a lot of things to help this team. I talked to Barrington earlier in the year, he's going to have to figure out, night in and night out, what does this team need from him? Some nights it might be distributing the ball and getting other guys involved. Some nights it's going to be, 'We need you to score the ball.' It's a model of consistency."
