Buffs Tie For 10th At Guadalajara

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – The Colorado women's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the spring season, tying for 10th place at the Collegiate Invitational at Guadalajara Country Club Saturday.
The No. 43-ranked Buffaloes finished at 39-over-par for the 54-hole tournament, matching former conference rival Washington for the 10th spot.
Colorado was in ninth after Friday's first 27 holes, ending the day at 16-over. The Buffaloes finished off the second round early Saturday at 13-over and closed at 16-over in the third and final round.
No. 28 Florida State took the team title at 4-over, outlasting the 36-hole leader, No. 19 Oklahoma State, by three strokes. No. 32 Houston was third at 9-over, followed by host and No. 38 Virginia at 15-over and BYU at 24-over.
Low scores were at a premium throughout the two-day event at the 6,210-yard par-72 Guadalajara CC course. Only three of the 36 team rounds ended up in the red. A total of 15 team rounds were at least double digits over par.
Regardless of the field, following a three-month layoff after the best fall season in team history, Colorado came away disappointed with the result but looking forward to moving on and getting back to work.
"Tough couple of days of golf for us," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "We just didn't have our best stuff and a great golf course exposed some weaknesses in our game. This weekend showed us what we need to improve on and we are excited to get after it when we return home."
Sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy was Colorado's low 54-hole scorer, tying with two others for 15th place at 3-over, 216. O'Shaughnessy was in sixth after Friday's 27 holes at 2-under, in large part to her first round 70. She dropped one stroke on the back half of her second round to enter the third round at 1-under.
O'Shaughnessy hit her first real rough patch, playing the front nine of the final round at 4-over, but regrouped by playing even on the back, highlighted by a birdie at the 140-yard par-3 15th, clinching her fifth career top 20 finish and third this season.
"I'm really proud of Ellen for a solid individual performance," Sheils said. "She showed great poise this weekend and competed hard. Just great stuff from her."
Vanessa Ngo tied for 32nd at 11-over, 227. Ngo had Colorado's best final round with a 2-over, 74. She began her round with two-straight bogeys, but played even the rest of the way. Ngo rebounded from those first two holes with a birdie at the 353-yard par-4 third and then proceeded to make par on 14 of the final 15 holes.
Maya McVey tied for 45th at 14-over, 230. She had her best of three rounds during the final session, carding a 3-over 75. Carolyn Fuller finished tied for 48th, one stroke in back of McVey at 15-over, 231. Brenna Higgins tied for 53rd at 19-over, 235.
Washington's Carmen Lim took medalist honors at 5-under, claiming the title by two strokes over four other golfers. Only nine golfers in the 63-player field finished under par.
Colorado will return to action at the Thunderbird Intercollegiate, Feb. 9-10, at the Tucson Country Club in Tucson, Ariz.
