Buffs Ground Jayhawks in Overtime, 69-66

February 01, 2026 | Women's Basketball

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Colorado women's basketball team (15-7, 6-4 Big 12) defeated Kansas (13-10, 3-8 Big 12), 69-66, in overtime at Allen Fieldhouse on Sunday, Feb. 1.

The Buffaloes played a slow first quarter but found their momentum in the second. Junior guard Zyanna Walker scored 14 points in the third, keeping Colorado within four of the Jayhawks. The Buffs continued to battle with Kansas throughout the fourth, sending CU into its first overtime of the season. Colorado went on an early 6-0 run in overtime that Kansas couldn't overcome, allowing the Buffs to win, 69-66.

"We have a very connected group," head coach JR Payne stated. "This is probably one of the closest teams I've ever been a part of in 25 years of coaching. They believe in each other, they believe in us, we believe in them. It's a very, very cohesive group, so there's not really anything that can happen on the court that will throw a wrench into that. We might not play perfect, but certainly, we're going to stay connected and be able to execute down the stretch because of that cohesiveness."

Colorado had more points off turnovers (18-14), offensive rebounds (11-10), second-chance points (10-7), fast-break points (8-6) and blocks (6-4) than Kansas.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first quarter began with the Jayhawks scoring early off a layup, but Sr. F Jade Masogayo tied the game with a layup, assisted by Fr. F Logyn Greer (2-2). Colorado's defense kept Kansas from scoring again until there were two and a half minutes left in the quarter (4-2, KU). A steal and a fastbreak layup from Walker kept the game tied (4-4). The Buffs took the lead with a free throw and a layup from Fr. G Erianna Gooden, ending the first quarter, 7-4 (CU).

Kansas scored first in the second quarter with a layup, but Walker made a jumper to keep CU ahead by three (9-6, CU). The Jayhawks tied the game, but the Buffs responded with a layup from Masogayo, assisted by Walker (11-9. CU). A three from KU tied the game once again, but a foul sent Masogayo to the line for two free throws (13-12, CU). The Jayhawks scored four points before Jr. G Desiree Wooten made a jumper (16-15, KU). The teams were sent to the media timeout following a Kansas jumper (18-15, KU). The teams returned to trade pairs of free throws, with Wooten making both for the Black and Gold (20-17, KU). Walker scored a fastbreak layup, but Kansas closed out scoring with a free throw (21-19, KU).

In the first three minutes of the second half, Walker scored 10 points for the Buffs, with Masogayo making two free throws, and the Colorado defense held the Jayhawks to five points (31-26, CU). Kansas went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead (33-31, KU). The teams exchanged two sets of free throws, with Walker and Masogayo scoring for CU (37-35, KU). Kansas made a layup, and Walker responded with a jumper (39-37, KU). Sr. F Anaëlle Dutat scored a layup, assisted by Gooden, and the Jayhawks made four free throws to end the quarter, 43-39, KU.

Early fourth quarter fouls sent KU and Colorado to the line, with Walker scoring one for the Buffs (45-40, KU). Kansas scored three points, but two free throws and a three-point jumper from Wooten brought the Black and Gold within three (48-45, KU). Masogayo tied the game with three free throws (48-48). The game remained tied as both teams made layups, including one from Masogayo (50-50). Colorado extended its lead to six from two free throws from Wooten and a Masogayo jumper, forcing Kansas to call a timeout (54-50, CU). KU made four free throws to end the fourth quarter, 54-54, sending the game into overtime.

Wooten made an early jumper, but Kansas responded with a jumper of its own (56-56). Colorado saw six unanswered points from the Jayhawks from a Wooten three, a free throw from Betson and a layup from Masogayo (62-56, CU). Colorado and Kansas traded baskets, with Walker scoring a jumper for the Buffs (64-58, CU). The Jayhawks scored three points before sending Masogayo to the line for two free throws (66-61, CU). Kansas tried to make a final comeback with two free throws and a three, but a free throw from Walker and two more from Wooten ended the game, 69-66 (CU).

PLAYER STATS:
  • Jr. G Zyanna Walker recorded a career-high 24 points and a season-high two blocks. She also had four rebounds, three steals and two assists.
  • PAYNE ON WALKER: "She drew a tall task in trying to guard their leading scorer, so I thought she defended. I thought she rebounded again pretty well – four rebounds. She hit some big baskets when we needed them. As I said, sometimes scoring doesn't come as easy for us, but I think she hit three pull-ups in a row at one point in the third quarter, which were really important points for us. But she was very composed, sort of the consummate leader on the floor."
  • Sr. F Jade Masogayo scored 21 points, eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks.
  • Jr. G Desiree Wooten saw 15 points, three rebounds, two steals and one assist.
