Buffs' Second Quarter Surge Silents Army

Colorado bounces back with a 13-6 win over the Black Knights

WEST POINT, N.Y. – No. 15 Colorado bounced back from its first loss of the season with an emphatic 13-6 win over No. 22 Army at Michie Stadium. The Buffaloes' win on Sunday marked the first home loss for the Black Knights since the end of the 2024 season.

Colorado (4-1) picked up its second ranked road-win of the season, adding to the team's season-opening win over then-No. 2 Northwestern.

"What a great opportunity [for us]," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden explained about the quick turnaround. "For us to come out and play again, after that loss to Stony Brook, I thought our team came out confident and played together. We executed a lot of the little things that we talked about, just in terms of finishing plays, playing for each other, supporting the ball, and I thought we did a great job of that in the first half."

The Buffs had eight different goalscorers on Sunday, highlighted by Jaimey Hill's second-career hat trick. Maddie Shoup, Rowan Edson and Lily Assini each accounted for multiple goals on the morning. Shoup also led the team with three assists.

Army (3-2) scored the first goal of the game, but the Buffs kept them off the scoreboard the rest of the half. CU took a 3-1 lead into the second quarter and shutout the Black Knights the rest of the half, scoring nine straight goals to take a 9-1 lead at halftime. CU's goal-scoring run hit 10 straight goals early in the third quarter, putting Army in a bleak 10-1 hole.

Both teams received stellar goaltending throughout the 60 minutes. CU's Elena Oh, the three-time reigning Big 12 Goalkeeper of the Week, recorded eight saves in the win. Army's Lindsey Serafine made 11 stops as she kept the Black Knights afloat in the second half.

How it happened
Early turnovers afflicted both teams to start the day. Colorado had four in the game's first seven minutes, while Army coughed the ball up six times before Allison Riley opened the scoring at the 6:55 mark.

Colorado's Jenna Morely picked up a yellow card just after Army's opening score, putting CU down a man. Still, the Buffs were able to flip the script on the Black Knights' advantage, and Averi Gardner found the back of the net before the expiration of the card to even the score while a man down.

Just over a minute after Gardner's goal, Hill scored her first, off a free-position shot, to put the Buffs in front 2-1. Shoup added to CU's total before the end of the quarter to go up 3-1 at the end of the period.

"I think for us, just on the offensive end, being a little more patient," Whidden said of the team's early turnovers. "I felt like we were a little rushed to begin with, kind of just eager to go out there, looking for some first opportunities. I think once we settled down and were a little more patient on the offensive end, we were able to execute."

The Buffs' scoring streak hit four unanswered goals with Hill's second tally of the day, going up 4-1 with 12:39 to play in the half. Edson, Teagan Ryan, Assini and Sophia Yeskulsky each beat Serafine in the second quarter as the Buffs scored six more goals on eight shots on goal in the frame, closing the half on a 9-0 run.

"I think our ability to win the draws was huge," Whidden noted about the second quarter. "I think we won them 5-1 in that quarter, which gave us possessions. I think on the offensive end, we played with a lot of composure, and we were able to execute. When you're able to win draws and execute on that end, it kind of gives you a little control of the game. I thought we did a great job of that in the second quarter."

Molly Reed scored her first goal of the season out of the break, to push the CU lead to 10-1 with 13:43 to play in the third quarter, before Army ended the CU scoring run with a goal at the 13:29 mark. Hill completed her hat trick with CU's 11th goal of the day, and Army added another goal to cut the deficit to 11-4.

Rachel Kennedy had a goal called back to start the fourth quarter, and Army went down the field after the overturn and picked up its fifth score of the game to get back within six. Ryan Remaly added Army's third unanswered goal, cutting the CU lead down to 11-6 with 11:41 to play. Shoup ended the Army run with her second score with 8:17 to play, and Edson recorded the final blow with 59 ticks to play.

"We have to be a little more consistent in our play throughout four quarters," Whidden said of allowing Army's comeback attempt. "Especially coming out of halftime. That will be a focus for us. But in general, I think, we're playing a good team that fights and scraps. We knew they weren't going to just roll over for us."
