Colorado Snuffs Sun Devils in Senior Day Showdown
April 25, 2026 | Lacrosse
Buffs Score a Season-High 19 Goals to Finish 2026 Perfect at Home
BOULDER – Thanks to an offensive deluge in which the ball found the back of the net 19 times, combined with a defensive mastery that has become typical, the No. 15 Colorado Buffaloes cruised to an emphatic 19-5 win over the Arizona State Sun Devils to close out the regular season with a satisfying Senior Day on Saturday, April 25, at Kittredge Field. Â
The Buffaloes (12-3, 4-1) finished the regular season a perfect 7-0 in Boulder for just the fourth time ever. It was their first unblemished record at home since 2020, when the Buffs finished 3-0 in a campaign truncated by COVID-19. The last time Colorado was undefeated at home in a full season was in 2018, when the Buffs went 8-0. Â
"A great opportunity for us today," said Head Coach Ann Elliott Whidden. "Arizona State's a great team that always gives us a hard time so I'm proud of the team for how they came out and we were able to execute especially on the offensive end. I thought they did a great job of taking advantage of their opportunities and on the draw control we had a lot of control of the game."
Colorado improved to 10-4 against the Sun Devils, while also exacting a measure of revenge against the team that ended the Buffaloes' season in last year's Big 12 tournament on home soil at Prentup Field. Â
"It's really exciting," said senior Maddie Shoup on the win. "I feel like we know this team from last year and have a little bit of a chip on our shoulder especially with them ending our season last year. I think being able to celebrate Senior Day and being able to play them is just amazing. I think we all came out ready to play and were very successful." Â
Shoup scored a goal and added three assists to close out the regular season with a team-high 30 goals and 47 points. Colorado was led on the day by junior Teagan Ryan, who scored four goals with two assists, and freshman Rowan Edson, who scored a season and career-high four goals of her own.   Â
CU dominated the game with 19 draw controls to Arizona State's eight while also causing 10 turnovers. The Buffs outshot ASU 38-12 and had 20 shots on goal to the Sun Devil's eight.       Â
How It Happened
Colorado opened the scoring with 12:26 to go in the first quarter when Shoup delivered a perfect pass directly in front of the goal to Ryan, who scored to put the Buffs up 1-0. Shoup then doubled CU's lead with a goal at 9:53 to give CU a 2-0 advantage.Â
Arizona State would answer with a pair of goals to tie the game at 2-2 before Colorado opened the floodgates by finding the net six straight times. Rachel Kennedy and Edson each scored within 30 seconds to give the Buffaloes a 4-2 lead before Molly Reed found the back of the net with 3:20 to go in the first to put CU ahead 5-2. Edson scored again less than a minute later and Kennedy added her second with just 42 seconds left to extend Colorado's lead to 7-2 after one period. Â
Just 45 seconds into the second quarter, the Buffaloes hit paydirt again when Ryan scored her second goal on an assist from Lily Assini to put CU up 8-2. ASU added a goal to cut the deficit to 8-3 with 11:06 to go in the second quarter but the Buffaloes erupted for seven more goals to take a commanding 15-3 lead and essentially put the game away. Â
Colorado closed out the fourth quarter outscoring Arizona State 4-2 to cruise to the 19-5 win. The Buffaloes got goals from nine different players on the day, with Kennedy recording a hat-trick, seniors Assini and Reed each scoring twice, and Jaimey Hill, Averi Gardner, and Natalie Myslinski adding a goal apiece.  Â
