No. 14 Colorado Set for Conference Home Opener Against San Diego State
March 26, 2026 | Lacrosse
BOULDER – The 14th-ranked Colorado women's lacrosse team (6-2, 0-0 Big 12) is set for its conference home opener against the San Diego State Aztecs (2-7, 0-0, Big 12) on Saturday, March 28, at 12 p.m. MT.
The Buffaloes played one of their final nonconference games on Wednesday, March 18, against UConn, taking the victory over the Huskies, 11-5. Sophomore goalkeeper Elena Oh made nine saves to extend the Buffs' streak of holding their opponents to single-digit scoring to eight games. Freshman attacker Rowan Edson recorded her first hat trick and reached a career-high three goals and four points. Senior midfielder Lily Assini led the game with six points, including four goals and two assists.
"Lily's an amazing player for us," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden stated. "She obviously plays in the midfield, so she plays on all sides, but she could be a top attacker or a top defender for us. She's great on the circle and in transition. She showed up [on Wednesday] with a little bit of an edge and a purpose, and we saw that a little bit at the end of the second quarter. She does so much for us just in terms of the competitiveness and the mindset this team shows up with, and we need that from her every game."
This week, two Buffaloes received Big 12 Player of the Week honors. Oh earned her fifth Goalkeeper of the Week award this season, ninth of her career. She currently sits at second in the NCAA for goals-against average with 6.22.
Edson was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week, marking her first weekly award of her career.
"Rowan is capable of so many different things," head coach Whidden said. "I think [she is] gaining confidence and starting to understand her opportunities. When [teams] start to key in on a couple people, we have other people that can be aggressive and step up."
Saturday's matchup between the Buffaloes and the Aztecs will be the 12th meeting in program history. Colorado is on an 11-0 run against San Diego State.
San Diego State (2-7) makes its first trip to Boulder since 2024. The Aztecs won their last game against Akron on Sunday, March 22 (14-13). Mia Maechtel is leading SDSU in scoring with 20 goals, 10 assists and 30 total points this season.
Last season, CU returned to the Big 12, going 4-1 in conference and 8-8 overall. In the first year back in the Big 12, the Buffaloes received 11 weekly conference awards, including four consecutive Goalkeeper of the Week awards for Oh (March 4 - April 1).
