CHULA VISTA, Calif. – The University of Colorado men's golf team is in fifth place after completing its second round action here Monday in the 19th annual San Diego R.E. Lamkin Invitational.
No. 51 and co-host University of San Diego used the best score in the second round – a 14-under 274 – to vault into the lead, as the Toreros have a 19-under total of 557, good for a three-shot lead over first round leader, No. 38 Long Beach State (563). No. 28 and co-host San Diego State is third (565), St. Mary's (Calif.) is fourth (568) and the No. 47 Buffaloes and their Big 12 rival, BYU, rounding out the top five with 7-under 569 totals.
The Buffs got off to a pedestrian start Monday, in eighth place after the first round with a 1-under 287 team score. All five players recorded scores between 71 and 74, and collectively CU had 17 birdies, 56 pars, 16 bogeys and one double bogey. While fourth in the most birdies, the 16 bogeys tied for the eight-most.
But in the second round, Colorado turned in the afternoon's second-best score – a 6-under 282 – that propelled it into the top five and in striking distance of the top spot. The Buffs had 19 birdies after lunch, with 56 pars and 15 bogeys, one of the best performances as the winds started gusting off the Pacific Coast during most of the afternoon round.
First-year graduate transfer Jackson Rivera is tied for seventh after recording a 4-under par 71-69—140 scorecard on the 7,033-yard, par-72 San Diego Country Club course layout. He had nine birdies and 22 pars opposite five bogeys, and played the par-5's at 5-under, tied for fifth-best in the 96-man field, along with the par-3's at even and the par-4's at 1-over. His nine birdies are tied for the sixth-most in the field.
Rivera birdied the 236-yard, par-3 No. 3 hole twice, two of the 16 on the hole all day, one of only three players to do it both times, along with Long Beach State's Jack Cantlay (the younger brother of PGA Tour star Patrick) and Wyoming's Brody Knowlton.
Junior Brandon Knight is tied for 18th after fashioning a 3-under 74-69—143 effort. Bouncing back from opening has day with a double bogey on the 187-yard, par-3 6th hole, he went on to record eight birdies, second-most on the team, with 22 pars and five bogeys. He scored four of his team-high six birdies in the second round in a row on Nos. 11 through 14 – one of just three on the 158-yard, par-3 11th and one of only five on the 202-yard, par-3 13th. He's played the par-5's at 3-under, the par-4's seven and the par-3's at 2-over.
Senior Hunter Swanson and sophomore Parker Paxton are tied for 24th after both recorded a pair even-par 72's in the morning and afternoon. Paxton had eight birdies, 20 pars and eight bogeys to land even, while Swanson had five birdies, a team-high 26 pars (tied for sixth in the field) and five bogeys. He's playing the par-3's even, tied for seventh overall, the par-5's at 2-under and the par-4's at 2-over, while Paxton is also 2-under on the par-5's, and 1-over on the par-3's and par-4's.
Paxton now has 21 of 23 rounds this season of par or better (17 subpar), the team-best, with Swanson next with 18 (12 subpar).
Junior Ty Holbrook also opened with an even par effort and came back with a 2-over 74 for a 2-over 146, tying him for 41st. He had six birdies, 22 pars and eight bogeys Monday, playing the par-5's at 1-under, the par-4's at 1-over and the par-3's at 2-over. He did have one of 14 birdies on No. 6 on the day that finished his second round, as well as one of 16 on No. 3. One of his bogeys was just his fifth out of 83 par-5 holes on the season, to go with two eagles, 43 birdies and 33 pars.
"We had a really nice second round," head coach Roy Edwards said. "Jackson and Brandon played well and Parker and Hunter really hung in there. Ty did as well. The goal of the team today was to be patient all day, and we were very impressed by that. It's not the hardest golf course on the surface, but it's the kind that most definitely demands your attention or else it is very easy to make a bogey. Everyone is looking forward to tomorrow."
Long Beach State's Alejandro De Castro owns the individual lead after posting an 11-under 133, bolstered by the low round of the tournament, a 9-under 63 in the first round. It's good for a four-stroke lead over San Diego State's Chanachon Chokprajakchat.
Tuesday's third and final round will commence at 9:10 a.m. MDT off the No. 1 and 10 tees; the Buffaloes will be paired with BYU, UC San Diego and UC Davis.
