Buffs Open In 14th At Big 12 Championship
April 23, 2026 | Women's Golf
DALLAS — Colorado is in 14th place after the first round of the 2026 Big 12 Women's Golf Championship, played Monday at the Dallas Athletic Club Gold Course.
It was a rough day for the Buffaloes, who shot 20-over-par, matching their highest team round of the season. The Buffaloes are three shots behind No. 38 Kansas State, in 13th at 17-over, and still only five strokes out of the top 10 with two rounds to go.
No. 36 Houston is the leader after round one at 3-under, two strokes better than No. 15 UCF, with those being the only two teams in the red for the first day. No. 21 Oklahoma State and No. 25 Iowa State are tied for third at 5-over.
Colorado, ranked No. 47 nationally, had a decent start. Beginning on the back nine, the Buffaloes played their first six holes at even-par and, at that point, were just a few shots off the lead. But the wheels began to fall off heading into the clubhouse. Colorado played the 16th through the 18th at 8-over, a stretch that included six holes at bogey or worse from the Buffaloes' five scoring golfers.
From there, the front wasn't much kinder. Colorado had just three holes better than par on the front, with the bright spot coming on Maya McVey's eagle on the 404-yard par-4 fourth, the only eagle in Monday's first round for the entire field.
It was the big numbers that hurt the Buffaloes the most on the day. Colorado had 23 holes of bogey or worse by its four scoring golfers, numbers the group hasn't encountered much, if at all, this season.
"We let some bad shots and a difficult course get to us," Colorado head coach Madeleine Sheils said. "They're a composed group, fairly mature and their short games are pretty good. We were unbelievable at that in Napa (Chevron Silverado Showdown) and today we allowed ourselves to make big numbers by letting frustration get to us."
Sophomore Ellen O'Shaughnessy had Colorado's best round of the day, shooting 2-over, 74, putting herself in an eight-way tie for 23rd, just one stroke out of the top 20 and only two out of the top 10. O'Shaughnessy's round featured three birdies, including one at the 319-yard, par-4 eighth, her second-to-last hole to get to 2-over.
McVey finished one shot back of O'Shaughnessy with a 75 and is tied for 31st at 3-over. McVey was 3-over through eight holes, but played even the rest of the way. She was the only Buffalo to play the 411-yard par-4 18th well, making birdie, while everyone else was bogey or worse. On the fourth, she holed out from 150 yards with a 9-iron for her eagle, but then had back-to-back bogeys at the fifth and sixth before finishing off with three-straight pars.
Junior Carolyn Fuller is tied for 59th at 7-over. Freshman Teemapat Pateetin is tied for 64th at 8-over. Her round started well with three birdies on her first seven holes, but she played the next eight holes at 10-over. Vanessa Ngo is in 70th place at 11-over.
"We know our games are capable of playing a heck of a lot better," Sheils said. "We worked on a couple shots to play better in the wind after the round today, but we're going to stay positive, compete tomorrow and learn from the mistakes today.
"We expect to bounce back. This is a high-character group and we'll be ready to come out and compete tomorrow."
Houston's Natalie Saint Germain shot a 69 to take the lead after the first round at 3-under. TCU's Sofia Barroso Sa and Oklahoma State's Ellie Bushnell are one stroke back at 2-under.
Colorado will pair with No. 38 Kansas State for Tuesday's second round with those groupings teeing off the front beginning at 7 a.m. MT.
